Dragon Fruit & Miracle Fruit

Got to start off by saying that my wife and I have been experimenting with our DF by leaving them on the vine several weeks after turning red. We both swear that the fruit has been sweeter the longer it's been on the vine.

I have several miracle fruit berries that are ripe so I ate one tonight for the hell of it. Just wanted to see if it made any difference with some pears and a dragon fruit plucked earlier. Believe it or not...if you haven't tried this combination yet...it really made the DF unbelievable! Much sweeter and the flavor was more intense.

The DF we ate tonight was on the vine the longest yet and my wife said it was a little sweeter than even the previous ones. Don't get me wrong...I'm not talking cane sugar sweetness here, but loads better than the normal bland taste you find with the Giant Viet.

She said it was already very good without a miracle fruit. So she went out and ate one and agreed that it made the fruit more sweet and flavorful...enough so to make it jump out at you.

So if you have the opportunity, try this combination and see what results you have.

Do you see any decline (getting old) when you leave the dragonfruit on the vine?

Don't understand the question. My observation is that the fruit absolutely gets better the longer it stays on the vine. Now I'm sure there will come a point where the fruit starts to go bad. Haven't reached that point yet.

Bloom from Sunday nightphoto taken with flash Photos without flash: These last two were taken at about 10:00 pm and are lit only by my outdoor light, which fortunately lights up this part of the back yard. I guess the camera thought that there was enough light not to need the flash, but I'm glad I got it both ways. I hand pollinated this flower at 8 & 10 PM, and so I will see in a couple of months whether I was successful. I have three more buds (in the second photo) which should open later next month, and so maybe I will get something from those also. I got some help from the tropical fruit forum for hand pollination.

Interesting, good work finding that out. Ants will get mine if I leave them. Once things start tasting and smelling good, animals want to eat them for some reason. Go figure.

I have read somewhere that if you leave the fruit on 5 more days after it turn red, it will be sweeter.

My dragon fruit flowers bloomed and then the fruit turned yellow and dropped. Not sure why they dropped. Maybe I didn't do it right with the pollination...or it's too young.

Great idea to eat Miracle Fruit prior to the Dragonfruit! I usually douse my chilled dragonfruit segments with fresh Lime juice, which seems to really enhance the flavor. Am looking forward to trying them with MF.

I'm in a bit of a tizzy, since I'll be soon harvesting my very own home-grown dragonfruits. I had given up on these, since they kept blooming, dropping, blooming, dropping, so I thought I had a non-fruiting type. I had aquired them from Mounts Botanical Garden, at a plant sale, for $1.00 each cutting. The seller said all Dragonfruits were the same, and I did not know any better at the time. I have since purchased named varieties, but none are large enough to fruit.

It was a real thrill to see big, green, finned fruits on my plants..

I'll get photos after they ripen, and maybe someone can ID them.

They are thornier than my named varieties.

Funny how first-time fruit is such a big deal!!!!

Lisa, if you have plenty, try experimenting with the time on the vine. I've always read where you pick them within 5 days of turning red. I now believe this is geared more towards the commercial grower than the home grower. Pick one early and then leave some on for several weeks after and compare the taste. My wife and I are convinced the fruit are sweeter the longer they stay on the vine. Look forward to the pics! Thanks, J

I'd think if you have miracle fruit to eat with the dragon fruit, picking them a little early might be better.
But I do believe you about letting them ripen more would give you better natural flavor, without the MF.
Mine are still too young and neglected to fruit yet.
But they are growing.

Have you tried freezing them?
It seems to work.

congrats on the MF and DF crops. I was lucky enough to attend the Festival of Fruit this weekend and walked away with about a dozen DF. Lots of different varieties and colors. My daughter loves them, with a little lime, or even some plain yogurt. I plan on making a granita tomorrow.
