Snapdragons growing very slowly?
Comments (4)If it's 10 degrees on a cloudy day what is it at night I'll bet it is close to freezing or below. Your snaps won't do much growing with those temperatures. Take some clear 2 liter pop bottles or any clear bottle and fill them almost full with water, Put the lids on and let them sit on a sunny shelf in your greenhouse. The water will get hot. Before night time arrange the bottles around the container with your seedlings. Wrap bottles and container in a sheet of plastic or cloth--don't let it touch your seedlings. You will have made a little warm coccon for your seedlings. Remove everything in the morning so you don't fry your plants and repeat every evening until the weather is warmer. Your seedlings simply won't grow with the temperatures they are at now...See MoreAre my scorpion moruga seedlings growing too slowly?
Comments (4)I started mine in January and they are quite tall (reaching for light). Lost some leaves due to crowding so they are not the prettiest plants. My question is some of the Trinidad Scorpions have branched off to be a Y or even X shape and others are like a foot tall with no signs of off shoots. Is that a concern? Do they need to be pruned to produce another shoot. nervous pruning the main stalk with nothing else growing out the side and very little leaves... I started my 7 pots in Feb and they are small still. Only a few inches but several leaves and healthy. They have been the slowest to grow out of my bhuts, scorpions, habs, scotch bonnets and a few other hot ones....See MoreTomato Seedlings seem to be growing really slowly
Comments (7)Over watering a likely cause? Very much so. It also can cause cotyledons to fall off while still green because the tap root is water-logged. I grow thousands of tomato plants each year for sale and the thing that retards and/or kills more seedlings than anything else is over-watering. We go through discussions of this topic over and over every year at this time here and consistently over-watering proves to be the cause of the problems. Everyone does it even when they are absolutely sure they are NOT doing it. It becomes compulsive. If a little is good then more must be better, right? No. When they can be convinced to cut their watering in 1/2 they are always amazed how quickly the plants improve. Sure plants won't grow if the soil is too heavy but they also won't grow if it is too wet regardless of how heavy it is or isn't because the roots are lacking in air. All the water has forced it out of the soil. Prove it to yourself. Cut the watering on 1 tray and see how the plants do when compared to those you continue to water as you normally would. Comments (13)Thanks everyone for all the advice. I think you might be right and not fertilizing could be the problem. Next time, I'll do an experiment as Ignatz suggested: one half with no added food, the other half fed. I'll also use a plain seed starting medium. As for why it's 75 degrees, I am growing inside my house (bathroom to be exact) for lack of anywhere better. Our house has poor insulation so the heat runs nonstop in the winter, causing the temp to get kind of high at times. The bathroom is also probably quite humid given people using the shower several times a day, bumping the temp up further. I'm amazed you all think overwatering was the issue. I know how easy it is to do that, and was really stingy with water. Yes, my pots did have drainage holes. They were plastic nursery pots, not peat. Would you say that watering once a week is too much between 1-2 months old? Also: Do you think my city water might be affecting the plants badly? One source said it was high in chlorine, which seems real bad for young plants but perhaps I'm mistaken. I'll try changing up my starting pots, too. Cells to 3.5 inch pots makes sense. Thanks again everyone....See Morecapoman
