'Jack Frost' Brunnera

Greetings fellow Utahns, glad I found this site.

Anyone growing 'Jack Frost' Brunnera successfully? I saw this plant last year and knew I had to have one, but the local nurseries were sold out. I found one at Cook's in Pleasant Grove last week, it was a tad pricey $12.50, but I think it's worth it.

So my question is, what kind of sun/shade conditions do you have it planted in and how's it doing?

I'm a Master Gardener, but this is my first time growing Brunnera.

I just got a Brunnera last year (dug it up from mom-in-law's place when she sold the house), and I don't know how it will continue to do. It grew well last year in a spot by my front walk, which gets shade for half the day and filtered sun through some roses for the afternoon/evening. It's looking a little scrawny, with small leaves so far, but it's been such a cold but dry spring that I'm not sure if it's the weather or if it's not liking the spot. It's in soil that's a mixture of native clay-ish stuff with compost mixed in. Here's a pic from last year in early April:

Thanks stevation, what a cute little plant you have! I'm thrilled to see they'll survive a Utah winter, especially one as icky as the last one.

Any source for Jack Frost Brunnera NOT insanely expensive?

Two years ago, I found some at Home Depot for about six dollars for a one gallon pot. The only thing is, you have to happen to be there right when they arrive! This plant would not like to sit in the sun (where they put it!) without water. Good luck finding them!

They self-seed prodigiously. At least here. Look inside the clump and see if B. 'Looking Glass' is still there. Remove the rest. They seed here prodigiously with green, green and white forms, some that look like b. 'Jack Frost' and others that appear identical. Today, as I was cleaning out one of the gardens, I discovered a self-seeded Brunnera which was in the process of eating a hosta. I had to soak the roots to separate them. The hosta is fairly large - 5+ eyes, but I didn't know it was there until I removed the entire clump.

what does a day squid do at night ... octopus up??? do you have somewhat mature plants in hand.. i cant believe you have babes ... this time of year ... if so.. presume they will be about the same size next year .. maybe a bit bigger ... and plant them however it is pleasing to your eye ... and if it doesnt work out.. move them next fall ... the biggest lesson a newbie can learn.. is that a garden is not really a plant and forget system .. it is not static ... and they often lose focus on reality.. by focusing on perfect INITIAL placement ... remove from pot.. insert roots down .. water properly .. and if you dont like the placement next season.. move them elsewhere.. that is how your thumbs get green ... or.. actually.. brown ... from playing in the soil ... you should be able to easily google IMAGES of the plants.. and get ideas for spacing ... and how size relates to what is in your hands .... i will do the first one for you.. see link ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: scrolling down the pix.. looking for individual plants.. i would suggest 12 to 18 inches.. for spacing.. but if you want crowded.. go for 8 to 12 ....

Filtered shade is best. The lightness of the leaves on the plant make it more suseptible to burning. Just so you know- $12.50 retail is a good price on this plant. It's a Terra Nova Nurseries hybrid and they are quite expensive. I can buy at wholesale and wholesale on that plant is $9.50

nice plant, but not jack frost. More like the false forget me not. It is a brunnera, jack frost is a varigated type.

Exactly. I understand it's not Jack Frost, but being a fellow brunnera (Jack Frost's brother, if you will), it may help to know that it survives in our climate and soil here.

Just got 9 jack frost from a local greenhouse for 4.95 each. Big plants to guess they did not know what they had.
Look great to between my ponds. Love there look and hardy as well cant beat that.
