Starfruit (Carambola) cultivate in pots?
Comments (3)I think carambola is a lot more sensitive to cold then figs are...and they need high light all year unlike figs. They are evergreen and do not go fully dormant. I think they grow very well in pots but you'd just have to bring them inside before frost danger and have it in a sunny area of your house...spritzing it with mist every 2 days or so to increase humidity. Those sources are right...young trees get damaged around 27 degrees but I would never risk that if I didn't have to so bring them indoors as soon as there is a frost danger. As for cross-pollination...I know for sure that the variety "Fwang Tung" produces fruit with only one tree and needs no other trees to produce fruit. This is a great nursery you can buy them from. Comments (7)Yeah, I think Fwang Tung before Bell. My Bell's are green until they turn yellow. I've never seen a white fleshed Bell. I purchased a Fwang Tung years ago...turns out what I bought wasn't what it was advertised as. Below is a link showing some comparative fruits. In any case, it is quite a specimen of Fwang Tung....much larger than I have seen. Must have had extremely good growing culture and be one of a very few fruits on a decent sized tree. Comments (6)Jay, I have small seedlings of both plants, not named varieties. You have me thinking, however, that I really need to be looking for named varieties, maybe grafted plants, if I want good tasty fruit. That said, I would add that from the point of view of foliage and attractiveness, the carambola does not compare to the wax jambu. Whereas the carambola seedling is gangly and pale, the wax jambu is colored deeply, with dark green and reddish tones to the foliage. Maybe carambola will be an ugly duckling that matures to a beautiful plant, but right now, without fruit, I'd take the wax jambu. Now someone can come along and comment on the FRUIT. Comments (10)Interesting....I have Bell, Kari, Sri Kembangan, Arkin, Thai Night, Hart, Possum Trot and a couple seedlings that are fruting. First, it has been my experience that the winter crops are sweeter than the summer ones. This discrepancy with what Jeff is commenting on may be as the result of some watering of flavor that my summer fruits experience as a result of constant rains and wet ground. With winter's usually drier weather my fruits may have a further concentration of flavor/sweetness. Or, Jeff could just be wrong (Lord knows I couldn't be). I have never had a Bell that I would call "disappointing or not sweet"....not at least as far as comparing them to other carambolas is concerned. I wonder if you really have a Bell tree. If you do, I wouldn't have a good explanation for your Bell fruit as you describe it. I have seen fruit improve with subsequent maturity, so its worth giving it another year to see if it straightens out its act. Harry...See Moregnappi
