My Young Mango Are Loosing Sprouts

I would like to know what causes the dying of mango leaf sprouts. At the start of a flush leafs turned brown and fell. Could this tiny white grub with black head measuring less than 2mm be reponsible?

Its very hard to tell what that is from the picture...but if its a bug there's a good chance it is hindering the new growths? Can you spray the tree with some soapy water...a couple of drops of Ivory dishwashing in a spray bottle...but make sure you do it in a shady location prefably very early morning or early evening and then rinse it with Plain water after a few minutes once you think the bugs are dead...soapy water in the hot sun could sunburn your leaves...

You may have to re-spray in case there's eggs as well...

Sounds like water- not enough,or too much at the roots. Not enough to feed young leaves..or the soil has gone bad,and is affecting the root system.

It would be almost impossible to diagnose this from a picture. Probably not much easier to diagnose in person. That being said, and with the proviso that I am no expert in drastic pruning (aka pugging), looks to me like the tree just decided to put its energy into the other sprouted branches from the prune point. I don't see any disease (it would be hard to see it even if it was there). I think the wilted brances just lost their connectivity with the water/nutrient flow in the trunk of the tree. Beyond that, I am not sure what to tell you. If that is all it is you will have no further problems and the tree will push its growing energy into the remaining growths. If it something caused by disease, then it is either bacterial, viral or fungal. If fungal, the fungicide will help, but a systemic might be more effective. If viral or bacterial, not much can be done and tree will either grow itself out of it or it will slowly decline. As far as it spreading if there is a disease process ongoing, that would likely happen with you using unsterilized cutting tools on other plants or by insects, probably not from mere proximity. The mango won't worry whether you're 16 or 160, it'll still be the same. The advantage is you wouldn't be too old by the time a seed grown tree produced fruit. But yes, prices on trees do vary a lot depending on where you live. The difficulty though with seed grown trees is they take so long to mature and then you could easily end up with fruit you don't like. There is however another option and that's grafting a tree yourself. Not the easiest thing to do but there's a lot of advice available on the internet. You can start off with a seed grown tree, doesn't need to be very old, and you get a piece from an older tree of a variety you like. The piece from the older tree is called "scion wood". The scion is as old as the parent tree and so is able to produce fruit very early, and it's identical to the parent tree fruit. You can get scion wood by asking around on forums, there's always people who are willing to share a piece of their mature trees. There are also places that sell scion wood but try freebies first. For germinating seeds, the husk isn't a problem. The important thing is to keep up the warmth and to not let them dry out, that's what convinces the seed to start germinating - the tropical conditions you create. The big 'but' here is that you have viable seed. If you can't be sure the fruit hasn't been chilled or had something done that kills the seed then ask if someone can send you some seed. I would but I'm not in the US so quarantine would confiscate it before it got to you. You've started on the path already, and there's a bit of a way to go yet. But it's very doable. Just keep asking questions along the way.

I lived and worked for 13 years in the oil fields of eastern Saudi Arabia,..Abqaiq to be exact. Shortly after arriving, I and a few others, ( very few ), decided to try our hand at gardening in our backyards, I wound up after two years, doing as all the other expats did, - plowing the withered/burnt fruits & veggies under and putting our energies to other endeavors. Sure, date palms grow there, but they are vigilantly maintained by the companies field workers/grass cutters, hired to do only that. Just wait till you are back in a normal climate to try planting mango trees. Where we lived over there, we got an average of 1/4 inch of rain a year, average hi temps around 85 - 110 deg F for 9 months of the year, although the humidity was low ! Didn't mention the frequent " Shamals " did I ? These are the vicious, blinding sand storms that pop up suddenly and last for 4 - 8 hours. Not trying to be negative, but why make it so difficult ? Unless you plan to live there for the rest of your life, ( shuddering now ), - wait till your work there is over and then relocate back to the " real world. ". I live in Florida where we get a lot of rain in the summer, the rest of the time I use well water, but I have used tap water for an extended period when my pump failed and I figure if it's OK for me??? Anyway, tap water here is PH neutral, and rain is a bit acidic, but alkaline is the opposite direction. You should test the PH of your treated and tap water and rain there I think. Flooding protection... mounding is a great way to eliminate that as a concern. Some areas here in South Florida are really prone to flooding and growers plant on mounds. Food for thought. As far as neighbors go, we have LOTS of mango trees in my neighborhood but I doubt anyone even looks at them till they have fruit on them.

The white thing looks like a small bead of mango sap to me.

This is normal. Those early "incomplete leaves" always fall off, and the well "advanced" leaves would come out. The latex color sap is normal during a strong grow sprout. keep doing the same routines.

Thanks all for your answers. Nancy, I sprayed that part last weekend with a homemade solution made of natural black soap (paste) with a little bit of vegetable oil and methanol. I use this for mealybugs and aphids, and it works. The bad part is that I did it in full sun and forgot to rinse it with water afterwards!

Stan, this NDM had a nice flush a few weeks earlier, with healthy leaves. Would you still believe that it could be the soil or the watering?

Dangermouse01 and Sapote, how would you explain that black dot at the tip of the sap?

I will check if is there any improvement when I'll be back home for the weekend.

black dot at the tip of the sap? The early ooze out sap had got darken or syrup like substance oozed out in the early stage had changed its color before the white sap came out. I saw this on my new spout all the time.

You are right. I found more sap exuding from other mango trees, and also white spiders on one tree and mealybugs on another.
