where is the the best place to start a FARM ?
Comments (40)I have really enjoyed this tread, have never laughed so much. Reminds me of that old acres of diamonds story where a landowner sells his farm to finance his global search for diamonds and ends up broke and homeless while the person who bought his farm discovers that it is awash with millions of dollars of crude oil or something of that effect. The moral of the story may be that many of us are sitting on acres of diamonds so to speak but are so motivated for a geographical change or the pursuit of some elusive but unattainable dream that we do not recognize the treasures that are beneath our very feet or underneath our very nose. reminds me also of the french movie Jean De Florrante, (ca'nt remember exactly how to spell it,) where a man inherits a farm in the countryside of France and kills himself trying to make a living off of it while being sabotaged by his father who is trying to steal the farm away from his son in order to give it to his mentally retarded nephew, because neither father nor son know who each other are until after the death of the son at which time the father discovers that he has killed his true son and has thus ruined his acres of diamonds so to speak. The poster sounds like that they could be a front man for a group of Amish people who quietly buy up thousands of acres of prime farmland that is poised to increase even further in value in the near future, but I doubt it, sounds more like someone from Japan or somewhere representing a bunch of businessmen or something, who knows, but very funny tread. thanks, Barry...See MoreOT... my youngest boy moved into his own place
Comments (22)RFla, what a sweet, sweet post!! I remember all those feelings when my baby -- the only boy after two girls -- left for college. I though I'd never recover! He's now 37, with a sweet wife, a 6-year old and 2-year old twins of his own, so he's experiencing the overwhelming love I felt for him. It sounds as if you're doing it exactly right -- you've raised him to have both roots and wings, and that's not an easy balance to achieve. You're making it "easy" for him to leave home -- which is healthy and appropriate -- yet making it clear that he's still a huge part of your heart and your home. You're helping and supporting, and I'm sure you'll find it possible to gradually back away as he achieves more and more independence. My daughters both moved away from us after marriage . . . and now, after 15 and 19 years, we'll all be building homes next door to one another on a Tennessee ridge. Having established their independence by living away from us, they're now able to reconnect without feeling stifled. We're enormously excited about having them and half of our grandchildren next door!! Treasure the past, enjoy the bittersweet moment, and look forward to an exciting future....See MoreBest place to put the keypad for security system
Comments (10)We installed systems in half of the last six places we've lived. All six had multiple keypads. Find out if your company offers more than one included with the installation or how much more to add an additional one if you have to pay. If you have to pay, then you may have other options such as a portable key pad (very handy with full keystrokes, particularly emergency use poolside or placed on your bedside nightstand) or key fobs with just an on and off button (which have the disadvantage that anyone can use them as no code is required) or simply another wall-mounted pad which often are placed in the master bedroom but could be mounted anywhere convenient. To answer you question, one closest to the most frequently used door is helpful as in reduces the length of time needed to (de)activate the system, but it really depends on how you'll use the system and how many floors/ how large your house is. We currently have 3 levels, 4 keypads (3 on the main level front door, garage and master bdrm and 1 in the basement) and 2 fobs. Since we rarely go downstairs I find it helpful to usually keep the alarm always activated and by-pass the front and garage doors while home and may by-pass other windows or doors on occasion when the weather is wonderful. You may also check into adding wireless transmitters on garage windows and pedestrian doors or anyplace that your home may not be pre-wired but poses a concern....See MoreOT - Upstate New Yorkers? Comments (15)Vee, you are right on. FDR's estate is in Hyde Park and a riveting place to visit. There is the house and a museum. Chills ran up and down my spine as I saw the very foolscap on which was typed his Pearl Harbor speech, "a day which will live in [typed word crossed out] infamy [in his handwriting]". The Roosevelts are buried here as well. There's also a Vanderbilt mansion and garden practically next door, now owned by the National Park Service and open to the public. There is actually so much along the Hudson that you would need six weeks to see it all. Boscobel. Olana, the estate of one of America's greatest artists, Frederic Church. Van Cortlandt Manor, one of the old Dutch estates. On and on....See Morebreenthumb
