You can start the pits in damp potting soil as well as in water, so you could probably put it in a pot now, with just the upper part of the pit sticking out (just barely). I would think a 6" diameter pot would be about right. You can always repot it into a larger pot later on. So the shock of being in a drier environment doesn't kill it, I would put a clear plastic bag over the newly-potted pit, but cut some holes in it for ventilation, and enlarge them when the top starts growing, then leave the pot uncovered for air movement. All you would need would be some mold or fungus to start. I would also put the potted pit in indirect light to encourage the stem to start growing, although it may grow well behind (time-wise) the root, like an acorn does. Once you've got some leaves, I would feed it with some diluted worm tea or apply a thin (1/8") layer of good homemade compost to the surface of the pot and water it in. Sue

seems like someone told me on here that dechoring what just as bad as not dechloring... search garden web for dechlorinating compost tea, wait...i found it, i actually asked the same question a long time ago: here was an answer: Aquarium dechlorinators are also fungicides. If you don't care about the fungal population in your tea, you can use a few drops of sodium thiosulfate per gallon. We know some people who were trained by Dr Ingham on how to use a microscope and stains to determine the quality of teas. They tell me that using tap water causes a 50% drop in fungal population and using sulfated dechlorinators results in a 100% drop in fungal population. The best water to use is unadulterated pond water or water from a flowing creek. Second best is rainwater. Third is tap water with the chlorine allowed to dissipate. hope it helps!

Hi dizzy. Almost all of them have four or more leaves per seedling, so I would guess that's what you mean by second set (this is the first time I tried to grow from seeds). I started mine in the house on a bright windowsill over the winter. They went outside in May and have been there ever since. When it starts to get too cold here in October most likely, I'm going to bring them in and put them back on the windowsill with my other mature amaryllis'. I don't have a light set up or room for one, but I'm sure they'll be fine. I think all the sun/rain/fertilizing they got this summer does wonders for them. They are growing very well. I don't think they should be too set back by being on the sill this winter. And just maybe I could see a scape next summer. I'm hoping!

utsharpie, I must admit that I do not understand the softening process as much as I should. The way I understand it, the potassium or sodium ions exchange themselves with other minerals in the water (ie. calcium etc.). I'm not a chemist. I am a little hazy on the chemical processes that take place and how they break the bond between the sodium (or potassium) and chloride. I'm fairly certain that the bonds are broken though. They had me install a reverse osmosis system for drinking water since there is no chlorine in the water. I only wanted to offer a suggestion as to what works well for me. It is a GE logix 760 softener. It was fairly expensive and I about blew my top when my wife told me that she had purchased it. I am now happy that we bought it, although it cost us about $5,000. I'm sure we could have gotten it for thousands of dollars cheaper if she had given me a chance to shop around.
