did anyone go to Fairchild Mango Fest?
Comments (4)Hey Tammy, How exciting!! Congrats on your new baby to come... Unfortunately the Mango mania I'm going to in Pine Island actually doesn't have anything to do with Pine Island Nursery which happens to be in Miami. I know its confusing, when I first heard of the PI nursery, I thought they were located in Pine Island also, when I lived in Miami(for two years) is when I realized they were located in Miami...hope that made sense, lol... But I will definitely update If I go to the Mango Festival! I will try and posts pictures....See MoreWhich 3 small mango trees to choose?
Comments (30)@mango_kush yes we have problems with fruit flies here also, but they don't attack the Ruby Supreme guava. They do attack other guava varieties with a strong guava smell. I have even picked rotten guavas off the ground and inspected them for maggots and found none just sugar ants. The soursop has been that height for over 3 years now. When it reaches the height of the house the cold weather kills that wood. All I ever do is trim any dead wood when it goes dormant. This soursop is a Filipino variety. I planted it about 2 feet from the house on purpose so that it could survive the cold weather since its extremely sensitive to cold temperatures. @pulglvr1 you can try contacting the company that makes the product using the link below. When I first saw the product I knew that it was perfect for protecting plants and this past winter definitely proved that to me. Be aware that just covering your plants using this product alone may not enough. You must also provide a sustainable heat source such as a light bulb of sufficient wattage. I did lay this bubble blanket along the ground to the window sill on the west side of the house to protect sugar apple and pineapple plants. From the picture you can see that all the plants below the bubble wrap survived without any damage even though I did not use a heat source. The bubble blanket was able to trap the heat from the ground and the cinder blocks to keep the plants alive. If you look closely you can see that 3 of the pineapple plants have fruited. In front of the wood fence at the far end of the house are the rolls of the bubble wrap ready for duty this coming winter. Here is a link that might be useful: Astro Cooler...See MoreSan Felipe Mango

Comments (4)Sultry, since they are the experts they put some of the good varieties for tasting, in my opinion they were all tasty but some I like less than others for example the Cogshall and a variety green when ripe but because we are all different my other half liked the variety green when ripe and he said I don't really like a little bit sour tasting but I liked that one. I was happy to see the size of the fruit, the colors and flavor for some of the varieties like the early ones that I am most interested in and have them in my garden like Rosigold, also saw the Fairchild mango that I am supposed to have and had my doubts because mine is a larger fruit but after seen the fruit again and sampling, I think I have the same variety after all. I did find out my favorite this year (next year maybe different:) it was one of the mangoes from the vendor, he said it was his first time doing the show and he was expensive, all his mangoes were imported from India and Pakistan and had no labels but I was able to try them and I liked the small one, it was delicious! and reminded me a mango that I use to like as a child. I do like a lot of mango varieties that have a pure mango flavor and don't like too much the ones with coconut or other flavors in them. Writersblock, I think the varieties to sample were kind of the same like other years, the big difference was in the mangoes for sale at the Fairchild booth, they used to sell a lot of fruit and with the names on them, so it was easy to remember which ones you like them or not. I could pick all different varieties in one box, this year it was very different to deal with the vendors. Some more pictures from the festival.... Varieties for tasting Mangoes for the auction It was so hot that we hit the beach after the mango festival Sultry, are you growing yerba buena? it is the real thing for mojitos.:) Silvia...See Morepuglvr1
