Sorry to be so late getting online. I had an eye exam at noon and wasn't sure if they would dilate my eyes or not. They did so with our bright sun today I couldn't manage to do much. Finally took a long nap and I think that was a good use of my time. :-)

Word Game

Today I drew the letters "b" and "n". I will stop posting words after this. I think as I keep drawing letters, so much of the words will be filled in that it will take the fun out of it ... plus the problem of finding more "nip" words that aren't really odd. One word is already off the list for guessing because it is totally filled in.

Oh sure, Katie, leave me the hard part! Just kidding! What a beautiful ending, perfect, Katie! I'm adding my part now, so we can all read how the poem fits together. And I'll post again when I get the poem from Katie. And I just want to say: Great job, everyone! Not just with the poem, but you all did an excellent job of keeping the Robin going, in a timely manner, for which I am really thankful! Wasn't quite sure how this would work out, but it turned out far better than I could have hoped for. Thank you all for being such great FOTESSERS! And one more thing, I really enjoyed doing the Robin (and hope you did too), and loved Margo's idea for doing a Round Robin Story. SOOOO, we may borrow another month from Jeanne and do this, maybe in the Fall. Keep it in mind and I would appreciate any imput, ideas or suggestions for a Round Robin Story. And because I didn't have to work very hard to finish up, I thought I would give the Poem it's title: Friends of the Earth's Spring Journey A haze of green and longer days, And lots and lots of rain! Helps nature work behind the scene as sunshine pushes through the grey. Upwards push the tender tulips. Companion of the daffodil So lovely, but I sigh, there are evil weeds to dig, battle them tomorrow, for now a glass of wine. First blooms of Redbud glow pink and bright, under a clear blue canopy in the morning sunlight. As with all God's creations, spring brings forth the beautiful flowers. Which are doubly enhanced by the coming of April's showers. Pollen-nation! Oh the sneezes and the misery; the price we pay for leaves on the trees and a colorful array of bright Spring flowers. Let the rain come back again - the irritants to devour. Descending from cloistered winter aeries, Exclusive silver-winged garden faeries dance in the flower beds among blossoms of yellow, pink and red. Cherry trees blossoming in the sun, give a small taste of bounty yet to come. Days lengthen, the earth grows warmer; summer's just around the corner. Awaiting to see the hummingbirds flight, so majestic, what a delight. How fast and silent its small wings zoom, intending to drink nectar from every bright bloom. Spring has sprung, the blossoms bloomed, Now there are plants to tend. Never fear, SummerÃ¢ÂÂs almost here; But for Spring, this is THE END! Shirley!

Hi everyone, Very nice, Ellie, that your county provides compost bins to its residents. Wish ours did that instead of spend money to collect yard debris. Alana, I love the sound of your orange-flowered garden. Orange colored flowers are some of my favorites. Shirley, great GLOW photo of the hot air balloons. What a shot that captures the moment! Jeanne, I watched the College World Series, too. I yelled enough to make myself somewhat hoarse. OK, so I admit to being a very "animated" college sports fan when I get into games... Although I am a die-hard SEC fan, I confess I was pulling for my husband's alma mater, U of AZ. Only fair, since he dares not pull against LSU. As for the cormorant chicks - When we band, we place a band on each leg. One is a small metal band issued by the US Fish & Wildlife Service, Bird Banding Lab. The other is a plastic, colored band that can be read from a distance using binoculars or a spotting scope. Throughout the breeding season, we spend several days sitting in blinds, observing for banded birds that return to that colony. That enables us to get much more info other than through someone finding a dead banded bird and reporting it to the Bird Banding Lab. We can determine breeding site fidelity, survivorship, age structure, and other population demographics. Last year we re-spotted more than 400 unique bands at the 2 islands we conduct our observations on. Here is a "digiscoped" photo I took of one of the birds. As to why we do it at night - that is a matter of reducing disturbance as much as possible. All the birds are calmer at night, so we try to only go on the island when it is dark. That means banding all night long. It also means on observation days, we leave the boat dock at 3:00 am and don't leave the island until 9:00 pm. Makes for a long day, and you have to stay in your 5' x 7' blind for the duration (and that is why we bring a "honey bucket" with us). Hahaha. Happy gardening, Katie

Hi Everyone, I'm finally home! And can I just say that coming thro Toledo on Interstate 75 was the same miserable experience it has always been. Never changes. These people need to work on their detour skills. Had a great visit with the granddaughters. My daughter and her husband just bought their first house, so there was a lot of packing, sorting, running back and forth going on! It's a nice little house in a great neighborhood, same school district and Tabitha is so excited - she gets to ride the school bus! Where they live now is only a block away from her school, so she had to walk. And I got to meet my grandcat, Aurora. Very pretty cat, American Tabby mix, quite nice and it only took her a couple of days to get used to me. Okay, let's take care of some swap stuff! First of all, a huge Thank You to Jeanne for covering for me. And at the last minute too. This visit was supposed to happen next weekend. Jeanne, I owe ya one! Thank you! I just got home and my cuttings from Beth arrived today. She sent generous amounts of each one, so I stand a good chance of rooting some of them. I have them soaking right now.

Red, White and Blue Bouquet

Get ready for July 4th! I have a book that lists flowers by color. Using that I'm gathering a pretend bouquet with red, white, and blue flowers. There will be 4 flowers of each color. They may not be things that bloom at the same time. I'm not being that careful in making the list. Also if the flower comes in more than one color, list which flower and which color - example "white lilacs"
You do not need to give a specific variety - just the common name.

For example if yellow was one of the colors I might list:
Yellow Sunflower
Yellow Gladiolus
Yellow Daylily
Yellow Golden Rod
That is as specific as you need to be.

Other hints: I'm trying to pick 12 flowers that most people would know about. Obviously the blue might be a blue-violet.You have only 1 guess - all 12 (the full bouquet) at one time. The person who gets the most matches with what I selected will be the winner. If it's a 2-way tie both will get a prize. If it's 3 or more tied, we will have a tie breaker.

Please post your guess by Thursday, June 26th. That way there will be time for a tie breaker before the end of the month if we need it.

So let the bouquets begin!

I'll add letters by picking 2 more tomorrow and will fill in more blanks if they are in the words.

My cuttings are still looking good. I had to s"nip" off 2 leaves that had dried, but the leaves are no big thing. The more important issue is for roots to form. (Let me give everyone a hint: do not keep pulling up the cutting to see if it has rooted. Give it plenty of time. You may even see some growth occur before the roots have formed. This was something I was terrible about when I first tried cuttings. I would pull them up every few days to check for roots. No, they don't like that!)

Suzanne, no worries. In fact, it's a gorgeous week. Our highs are 80-85 this week (lows near 60) and we've had more rain this past week than we had all last summer. I think our drought is over. This will be a much better week to mail--and who would have guessed it?! They are predicting people will need sweatshirts at the Fourth of July fireworks. Amazing!

I've had white bleeding heart on my want list a long time and I'm so happy to finally have it.

We're getting ready to go on vacation for about 12 days and I'm trying to get everything planted and potted before we leave and I still have a ways to go.

I am so happy! A box came in the mail today! I would be doing the Happy Plant Dance around the living room except then I'd be doing the thing I did all day yesterday when I had the flu.
Oh, I'm so happy. I've wanted a hibiscus for so long. I just can't seem to germinate one from seed. Suzanne sent me Luna Red, Red and Plum Crazy!
She also sent Crazy Daisy (rooted) and Broadway Light's Daisy (rooted), Alma P. Aster and Purple Butterfly Bush!
Everything that needs it has been 'hormoned' and all are getting a cool drink of water.

Jeanne, I notice you have Beth as having sent to me. I posted that I received a great box of what I discovered were mostly rooted cuttings from her last week. At least I thought I posted it.

We are close to closing out the swap. I think we'll be waiting to see how long it takes my package to reach Annie. (I walked around the garden earlier to plan what I would take cuttings of... deciding that can really slow me down...)

I mailed the box with your cuttings Monday (June 30) - today where you are but already yesterday here in SC. I have a tracking number, but don't have it at hand. I'll post the number the next time I log on.
I hope it makes speedy progress across the country!

Good Morning, Everyone!
Another beautiful day here in SE Michigan. We had thunderstorms last night, but all is sunny now!

Jeanne, what a great swap! Loved reading about what everyone received.

I wanted to post a reminder that FOTESS is taking a break in July. We'll be back in August with our 2nd Annual FOTESS Yard Sale! Hope to see lots of our members join in and you can be thinking of the 2-3 items you would like to "sell"!

Sorry I haven't posted for awhile. I typed a long message and lost it because AOL kicks me off midstream so I gave up for awhile.

Anyway, so glad you got your package and like it , Annie. The little gift inside is a belated birthday gift. I know I don't normally send one, but it was so close to your birthday. I have been so bad about not posting them as they come along. You will be getting a prize packet, too. All the prize packets are on their way and should arrive on Saturday.

Everyone has recieved their swap package now, so the June swap is drawing to a close. Thanks for participating and posting to keep things interesting. Happy 4th of July to everyone.

Yes, Annie, that package went much cheaper as a priority rather than a priority flat rate. So many rules with post office packages. It was good news to me and I'm so glad the package actually made it in time.

I received my prize today. Thank you so much. The seeds are great. I love alyssum. Did you know that it's related to broccoli and it's edible! The bookmark is great. I can't believe you went to so much effort. And the M&Ms... Let's just say that my hubby says thanks! He spotted them through the bubble wrap and the rest is history.
