What your plants need for bigger, better tomatoes all season long

Annie

As many have been repeatedly asking about feeding tomatoes and how to grow big, yummy tomatoes all season long, I thought I would post the following information:

For Tomatoes...side dress:

1. 4-5 lbs per 100 ft row or 300 sq ft w/8-24-24 fertilizer or equiv.

or

2. or 6-8 lbs of 8-8-8 per 100 ft row or 300 sq ft

(or according to package directions per plant)

When and How often...at first FRUIT set and every 3-4 weeks thereafter.

One to two inches of water per week if there is no equivalent amounts of rainfall. (which is why it is so important to know what the daily or weekly rainfall amounts are)

In order to keep your tomatoes healthy and productive, you need to give them a side-dressing of fertilizer every 3-4 weeks all through the duration of the growing season and the plant's normal life expectancy. This will also keep those big fruiting tomato varieties producing whopper-sized fruit like you got at first.

Information obtained from the LSU Ag. Center, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. (2008)
