Ficus Tree (rubber tree/plant) Pot Size ?
Comments (3)Ficus can be maintained in any pot size you wish. If the roots are filling the current container, and you don't want a larger container (and i wouldn't, too hard to manage in my opinion), then at the next repotting (this should be in the early summer, when it's warm and the plant is growing well), root prune about 1/3 of the roots, work out the old soil from the root ball, and repot with fresh soil into the same container. Water well, then not again until the soil is very dry or new growth resumes, at which point you can resume your normal care. Every time it gets root bound you repeat the process, but go ahead and let it get root bound, ficus don't mind until it gets ~really~ extreme. I would top prune about 1/3 of the foliage at the same time to control post transplant leaf drop, but some people would disagree. That's what works for me though....See Morewanted: wanted: longans or cutting to plant?
Comments (1)Wish you weren't so far away. I'm way down in Sarasota County. If my longan doesn't bloom this year, I'm cutting it down. Would be happy for you to come take it. It's 7 years old, and I think it's too warm here in the winter to induce blooming....See Moreno new growth for 9 months on Kohala Longan Tree. HELP
Comments (9)I would not pug it anymore like Jeff said, it needs some leaves for photosynthesis. It has been really cool lately in SoCal and my inlaws longan hasn't grown much in the cold weather. Lychee and Longan grow in spurts. You can sometimes see little bump like protursion like zits on the branches before new growth pops out. My inlaws longan wasn't doing very well in a pot for some reason but once they planted it in the ground, it started doing really well. There seems to be a consensus that your plant is not getting enough sunlight. I personally like to give my fruit trees Fish Emulsion and liquid kelp at very very diluted amounts. I think the brand I use is King Neptunes which is a combination of fish and kelp. I dilute it about double of what the instructions recommends. Your plant probably wont even need any fertilizer until it has another growth spurt but a diluted feeding for a plant you've had for 9 months without any fertilizer shouldn't hurt. The trunk of your tree around the base area seems a bit moist. May I ask why the cardboard is around your tree? In my opinion, the daily transpiration/evaporation cycles play an important role for the trees rhizosphere. By keeping the cardboard there, you may be holding in too much moisture and not allowing the soil to breathe properly. This may cause fungal or other problems. Your tree still looks like its in good shape and with a little TLC, it should be able to branch and leaf out nicely. Let us know how it goes!...See MoreLongan Tree Planting
Comments (2)I don't grow Longan but grow Lychee...they have similar growing conditions I believe? Longan being less fussy and might be more tolerant to frost than lychee. You don't say what zone you live in? Are you planting this in the ground or in a Pot? I believe lychee and longan both love water and don't tolerate the soil drying out completely....Keep the soil "moist" NOT sopping wet or the roots and leaves get damaged... If you're planning on growing it in a pot...here's a link below from the Tropical Fruit Forum a while back...Good luck!
