Well folks, it don't mean anything until it crosses the finish line - Ripening mangos I'm talking about. Doesn't matter how many cute babies you had that spurred your bubbled dreams of dripping chins - it's what stays on the plant and doesn't drop out of the race. So I've had some disappoints, as we all have had....

I've only included photos of plants that have done something since my last update May 1st. The first one is my best tree - Manila - has about 35-40 (60-65 last year)on it - but of course you can't see them all - still a good 6-7 weeks from ripening would be my best guess:

Then the Keitt with 6 nice ones, maybe half of those you can see:

The Edward, followed by the Rosiegold each have only one (Eddie had about 7 on him and Rosie about the same before they jumped ship):

Beautiful pond and nice mango trees you have mangodog. I only have 3 so far, but wish I can have some more. How close do you plant those trees together?

Thanks.....well James - I've planted some no more than 7-8 feet from each other as I plan on triming them to fit the space between the pool and back fence (only about 5 feet or so) and let them sort of grow in to each other I suppose....but, they say they should get more room than that.....we'll see how it goes....

agree with BahamaDan also. you will want to leave as many leaves on it as possible the more leaf-area exposed to the sun the better some think the fruit is sweeter tasting with more leaves and sun also. Just looking at your pic, i would add a lot of mulch to the ground near the plant keep it an inch or 2 away from the trunk though. if a lot of mulch is touching the trunk,when its wet, it can cause problems. i would mulch till the drip-line about 3ft i a circle around the plant. leaves, grass clippings etc... are fine wood chips are even better. compost even better... a few coffee grounds are great too, they attract worms, and papaya love worm castings. i get 50-80 lb of grounds from starbucks every couple of weeks

i see one flower, bottom left arrow the rest look like leaves to me. its real hard to tell until they are large enough to see the difference. Male usually hangs down from a stem. females have a wider bud. Herm's look like females, but , sometimes a bit more narrow Mangodog is on spot about them hating cold-wet feet too. will quickly kill them. I use chicken poo. its high in nitrogen sometimes i use a high N fertilizer with micronutes they respond real good to both. - Mangodog are you sure that is a TR Hovey ? The fruit is hanging down on stems which means it was a male flower. (supposedly) and now a male fruit. Puglvr, You grafted Maha looks so healthy with all those long full size leaves without any damages. The fruits look great to me, except why there is no single pink flush but starting to yellow. Not enough sun exposure? I also notice the trunk still has the strong curve near the soil line, and I believe the curve section is part o the main root from the seedling root stock. IMHO it's safe to cover the soil up to the end of the curve for more root development, but it's your call. My Maha tasting report. From the inside look of PuglvrÃ¢ÂÂs cut open Maha, I decided to serve mine by not peeling the skin, just like when eating a ripe Manila, with a spoon, which has thin delicate skin. With a very sharp knife I fileted it into two halves, and to my big surprise, the seedÃ¢ÂÂs literally paper thin,a long and flat as it was described by others, about 3mm (0.120Ã¢ÂÂ) thick!!!! After Ã¢ÂÂpeckingÃ¢ÂÂ off all the flesh on the seed I cut open it with a scissors Ã¯Â¿Â½Ã¯Â¿Â½" there was no embryo inside, not even a tiny dot!!! This is as close to a seedless mango as it can be. Maybe a normal size fruit of 7Ã¢ÂÂ long would have a normal seed? The center of the flesh is dark yellow as a 5-minute boil egg yolk, soft texture like Manila. The taste is total different for the top half and bottom half. The bottom half has very strong aroma, it reminded me of the famous King of Fruit (for those not hate it), Durian. http://www.courierpress.com/lifestyle/smelly-selection. The top half is as good as the lower half except not having the strong aroma. Its sugar is more than enough but not overpower sweet. Soft, creamy, and sweet. I would prefer to have more acidity. Although the outside skin texture was tight without any sign of wrinkle of a slightly overripe mango, but the center flesh is a bit soft for me, plus less acidity, and so I think itÃ¢ÂÂs overripe for my standard. For sure next time I will try Maha two days sooner. My instinct was right, that it should be ready when it had strong aroma (monkeys wouldnÃ¢ÂÂt wait this long, and the fruits were designed to be propagated by animals). There are long strings of fiber closer to the skin. Skin is a bit thicker than Manila, and no fiber around the seed. Maha is a unique mango for sure, acquired taste/smell. ItÃ¢ÂÂs a keeper for me.

Hey Mango dog, How's your Maha Chinook doing? Mine has really been impressing me. I had 3 growth flushes this year and maybe I will end up with a 4th. Each time it flushes growth again, I cut the new growth back a few inches. So far, this has really been a benefit for me. Two of the branches that flushed produced 6 or 7 new branches, and one of them has an inflo. I think the power chord on the HPS got yanked on and it snapped the inflo in half..GRR!! I noticed today though that it is still growing and maybe...just MAYBE it will still flower. has yours produced inflos? What do you think of it's growth? Mine doesn't grow really fast but 3 flushes a year, I gained about a foot of new growth. I am all ready looking at this tree wondering how I will keep it in bounds in the future. I can see myself having a dilemna over pruning it. I hate the idea of having to cut it back just so I can winter it over indoors:( Andrew

If I wasn't mangoed out I would be extremly jelous of your tress. My largest mango is about the size of your Rosie. Here is a pic of the excess of mangos in the streets of Merida, you literly step on them as you walk.

...thanks folks for your kind words....newgen - I don't know the name of the lilies - I remember buying them in a box at lowes that just had the bulbs in them with that colorful picture of the flowers on the outside....

so...quick question - Golden Nugget Mango - they are selling them at my Lowe's now - it seems like a tree worth getting - what do you guys think?

Somewhere in the old posts Harry said that Golden Nugget was the last mango to ripen at Pine Island last year. Seems like as good a reason as any. Go for it!

Hey Gary,

Everything is looking Fabulous! Nice Mangos, Beautiful yard and Pond, and I love the Traveler's Palm. Not very common but absolutely beautiful. Thanks for posting!

It wasn't me that posted the late/Pine Island report....I think it was Mango Kush. I have no knowledge as to what was late at PIN. In my yard, I consider Gold Nuggett a late-mid-season mango or at best an early-late season mango. Nice mango.....colors up a nice golden color.....so the name fits. It is worth the effort from my perspective. It doesn't come in first on most tastings, but I wouldn't throw it off the tasting plate either. Neelum and Keitt are considerably later in my yard.
