If you come to town the Al's Garden Center in Gresham had a large selection of Clematis last week. A much bigger selection than their Sherwood location and twice as many as Portland Nursery's two locations. I was looking for a specific Clem and visited them all in the last two weeks. I did find it there and was tempted to buy more.

There is unlimited things you could offer for sale. Keep in mind the marketplace swings so what you start out growing may not be what you end up selling - or - the way you see things today may not be as they end up. I would go with herbs myself just because you get more from less work and they are popular. The only advice I would like to pass on is to beware of mail order pitfalls. There is nothing wrong with shipping plants by mail as long as you obey the law but the price of shipping is high and constantly changing. It is impossible to claim on your website what shipping charges will be unless you also OWN the shipping company. All the major carriers will offer you a contract spelling out when they will pick up from you and how much shipping your goods will cost. You will then do the math and arrive at a set price to charge your customers. The cost of gas will rise or the weather will hit a mean streak and the contract will be voided by the carrier leaving you in a lurch, unable to raise your posted shipping fees. You now have customers ordering from your website expecting the posted fees (which they think are too high) and you have to take a loss just to get the product out the door. It happens even to the large companies. You get to sign THEIR contract, they won't be signing YOURS. Myself, I stand in line at the post office, postal rates are cheaper than everybody else but they won't come to your door to pick up and they raise them all at one time - no surprises.

And I don't think that shipping costs should be perhaps the main criterion in deciding on any site since how the plants are packed/shipped and what the plants look like I think should also be criteria to look at.. Making decisions is also tied up on which specific varieties a place offers that might be on your want list. SSE also sells nice plants and you can check them out as well. While this is bumped, will circle back to say my 'Perfume Princess' was planted last weekend. In a raised mini-bed abutting a north facing stone wall. Amusingly enough, after waiting years to get one of these suckers, and finally ordering it from the very reputable Dancing Oaks which was one of the first mail order nurseries to offer it...suddenly Monrovia's website has changed/updated in a way that "allows" it to be sold to an east coast zone 7. But I'd prefer to support Dancing Oaks anyhow - and Monrovia wants 2X as much for it - it's just that for at least the 2 prior springs I had been trying to order it with Monrovia's "order and pickup at a local nursery" which OUGHT to be the wave of the future for large wholesalers, but it wouldn't let me. I don't think the way they are going about implementing it is particularly intelligent. If there is some reason they think it isn't suitable for your area, the website ought to inform you of that. "We shall see what we shall see"
