Hardening off plants

I have started seeds for the first time and they are doing well (sowed around march 13). I have started placing them outside on a bench with a burlap bag as a top to diffuse the sunlight (all day). I have been doing this for 3 days and most are around 6- 8 inches tall. At night I bring them back in. It gets around 40 at night and 70 daytime. I was wondering what temperature it would be safe to leave them out all night. I didn't know if it was still too cool for them but I am running out of room in the house with them getting so big. Also not sure when I should start removing the burlap top. I can't be there to just let them have a few hours during the day under direct light.
