Longan second crop

My Kohala set fruit and now they're pea sized. I see more flower shoots coming out on the branches without fruit. Anyone know for sure if they should attain full fruit size at maturity? Seems when peaches do that the second crop doesn't size up correctly.

As a side note, pepperseed white longan is sending some flower shoots, which is incredibly late. I might let a couple stay on to plant the seeds, and to evaluate its fruit, since its a rare variety.

That's interesting, I've never seen the longans here bloom twice like that here. The branches that don't bloom here, usually just skip a year. I think they would probably attain full fruit size especially in your area. Glad to hear about the pepperseed longan, let us know how it goes. I actually had another seedling flowered this year, I don't know if its gonna hold any fruit though. Also successfully grafted a Sri Chompoo onto a seedling this year. That's a new one for me.

Good work getting the Chompoo graft, how thick was the scion and seedling, what kind of graft? I love Chompoo and Biew Kiew. As it turns out, the little notches which I thought were going to be some flowers look to be new branches popping along with new leaf growth. Its amazing how quickly that growth is coming, probably due to heavy rains we've received a couple weeks ago. I shouldn't have counted my eggs before they hatched.

Ohhhh.... so sorry Eggo, you missed them :-( Actually, I'm eating the last handful right now. There's still a couple of small ones sticking to the branches, but the birds have gotten most of those already. I think I sold about 13 lbs. of them. The most common reaction was "what IS this, a grape or a cherry?", and when offered a sample most people decided it was too much work for too little reward (have to spit out the seeds and skin), even thought they are very sweet and flavorful. A few, though, knew what they were, mostly people who had been to Brazil, I think. One told me that Bebel Gilberto had recorded a song called "Jaboticaba". I'll have to go find that one. I've never seen a white one, but apparently there are 4 different species that are grown commercially in Brazil. I think this one is Myrciaria cauliflora, and they really are black when they're completely ripe. Meanwhile, my husband just told me the rambutans are almost ripe (I hadn't noticed, there's not many). I sure hope they're sweeter than the single fruit I picked last year!

A late second crop from any determinate variety is always a possibility. But it is just that - possible - but not probable. And the size and quality of the second crop is minimal. It all depends on the growing conditions, he weather and the health of the plant. Dave

Blueberry second crop and pruning logic

Where I've forced some early second crop it's been by pruning back to buds that would have been fully fruit buds if allowed to mature. But by pruning before fully developed they were part vegetative and part fruit, a strange concept. You'll recognize these shoots as long clusters of huge berries with no leaves. Perhaps there are other possibilities but that's what I've seen. You can't force a second crop via pruning unless you wait until fruit buds have at least partially formed. I usually do a full renewal pruning in June right after harvest. This doesn't force fruiting because flower buds haven't had time to form. So this won't be a full winter pruning more like just the tips. But it's not on the tips where the vigorous fruiting shoots occur. I'd recommend trying different techniques. The right technique probably varies with variety. I've heard Sharpeblue can bear off season in your climate. There are growers, I think, south of LA that do this commercially. Perhaps you could find info on their cultural techniques and varieties.

It was really thin, Gary. Not even the thickness of a pencil. I used a side veneer graft. Oh well, I would of like to see what kind of fruits your seedling produce also. How large is the tree? Sometimes a good trick to use to get seedling specimens to mature is to graft a mature budwood onto it. In many plants this will trigger the entire plant to bloom and fruit. Both my seedling longans bloomed at about 4 years old, give or take a year. Both times, it coincided with a failed grafting attempt I tried on the seedling.

Actually it was the Kohala (airlayered) which had the branch shoots. Since it already has fruit, not too disappointing. My pepperseed longan is also an air layer. The only seedlings I have are the ones from China, Shi Xia and Chuliang. They are only 1 foot tall, so it'll be a while. The bloom in your situation could have actually been caused only due to stress of having part of it cut, with or without an attempted graft. But yeah, perhaps mature tree scion on it might have been it too.

I like to think I had something to do with it so I'm hoping it was from the graft. =)
My grafts are usually side veneer and I don't really do any pruning to the branch until the grafts take. If it doesn't take I don't do any pruning. I had always read that longans had some sort of graft compatibility problems so I only tried once until this year. Here's the latest pic of the new graft growing, its on one of the minor branches on the seedling. I just lopped off the non-graft part hoping to get more growths on graft.
