If they survive I may have some young helleborus for you if the critgters don't eat them all before the swap. I too am getting cabin fever and dying to get outside to see what is still alive

What is it with the seed and plant catalogs? I have been getting stacks and stacks of them, as bad as the pre christmas deluge. I use them under mulch in my flower beds so they don't go to waste, but this is getting ridiculous. Why do these companies send out catalogs with the same stuff week after week? You would think folks who sell plants and garden supplies would have some consideration for trees, pollution etc.

Outsmarting the tree rats (squirrels) around my house is a full time job. This past spring I hit on a new idea. When I plant a container I invert an empty wire hanging basket over the container and the plant gets sun and can be watered but the squirrels can't dig in it. Another idea: I bring in a lot of plants to "over winter" under lights in my garage. I have so many that it is hard to reach my hand under the lights (4 shop lights) to the middle for watering. So I bought a pump sprayer with a long wand and it works great! In late winter I add a little liquid Dawn detergent, few drops, to each gallon of water and not only does the soil get wet easier but the worms that are waiting to hatch into distructive pets just don't hatch. Don't know what it costs me to run those four shop lights all winter but I don't care. It is a small price to pay to be able to "garden" every weekend in the garage. Many people have mentioned that they mark their outdoor plants with a "permanent Sharpie". In my experience there isn't a "permanent Sharpie", they all fade and quickly too. A grease pencil/china marker or expensive "no fade" garden center marker are the only markers I have found that won't disappoint you by fading. Eight years ago I decided to learn about gardening so I tapped into my local library. I checked out nearly every book they had on gardening and learned so much. The Gardenweb forums are also a wealth of information and entertainment. There is always something new to learn and I appreciate all of you who take the time to write in your ideas. One last idea from me...I keep a small notebook on my computer table and jot down any idea I find that's new and I will want to try. Little pieces of paper get lost but I always know where my notebook is and also use it when I order "on line" so I will remember the name of the company and the order date. Tina or Trowelgal

Jleroi - you GO! Heck, I'm just excited I've got some blooms...so I won't be far behind you guys that live over there in that area of the Almeda Royalty! LOL! If I still lived in a suburban area as I did for almost 50 years, I too would be working the square foot planting method. I have friends in Tuttle that still use this method, although they live on 1 and 1/2 acre. I can see DEFINITE benefits, but I'm in a different spot in life. I delight in my nightly strolls between the garden areas! I didn't live rural until 4 years ago, and I absolutely LOVE having the space. They'll have to drag my old, feeble, crazy mind in my body back to the city some day...but I won't care because I won't know! Until then, I'm lovin' my space. But if life had dealt me different cards, I'd still garden..in whatever space I had. It's good for the soul..and the body.

French Lace Cookies The cookies are easy to make but a bit attention demanding, read the instructions before you get started so you are familiar with the process. Heat over to 350 degrees and move rack to top of oven. Line 2 large cookie sheets with aluminum foil and have a flat tray covered with wax paper prepared to cool the cookies (a cooling rack will not work as well for these, I use another large cookie sheet) One batch makes approximately 3 dozen cookies. Mix - 1 stick (1/4 pound) unsalted butter at room temp 1 slightly generous cup of finely ground nuts (walnuts, blanched almonds, hazlenuts, or pecans - each gives a slightly different taste to the cookies - for the plant swap I used my home grown walnuts with a small amount of pecans) 1/2 cup sugar 2 tablespoons milk 1 level tablespoon flour Chocolate chips (though you can use any flavor such as white chocolate, butterscotch or anything that appeals to you, though you can also leave the cookies plain) In a heavy pan, preferably a cast iron one, combine all the ingredients (I usually add the flour to the nuts in my food processor as I grind them up) except the chocolate chips over a medium low heat. Stir constantly until the mix becomes a thick paste, like cooked farina or oatmeal. Don't let the mix boil, just get thick. Turn the heat off. Using two teaspoons make rounded little balls of the mix and drop them onto the aluminum foil and flatten each ball slightly. Only bake one pan at a time, and only make 6 to 8 cookies at a time, spacing the cookies far apart, as they will spread. The first time you do this you might want to make a test batch with just 2 cookies to see how far they spread and how fast they cook. The cookies take about 6 or 7 minutes to cook. The biggest problem with these cookies is they burn very easily, so you can't have your attention distracted or do anything else whilst you make these. Once the first batch is in the oven get the second batch ready. After a couple of minutes baking, turn the cookie sheet in the oven so they cook evenly. If they are cooking too quickly (browning too much at the edges before the centers cook) turn the oven down to 325. Check the cookies every couple of minutes. Reverse the cookie sheet as you feel necessary. You want them to be lightly browned with bubbles over the entire surface of the cookie, don't let them get too brown. Remove the cookies from the oven and drop 3 chocolate chips on each cookie. Let the cookies sit in the pan and the chips melt. Start the next batch cooking. After a couple of minutes spread the chocolate gently over the top of the cookie using the back of a spoon. (don't forget to rotate the batch in the oven.) Move the cooked batch of cookies on their sheet of the foil onto a flat surface to cool completely and when they are cooled (this only takes a few minutes they cool quickly) carefully peel them off the aluminum foil and place them on the wax paper lined cookie sheet or tray. The cookies are very fragile so be careful. Place the tray with the cookies in the refrigerator to harden the chocolate. When you have a single layer of cookies finished and the chocolate has hardened, cover them with a layer of wax paper. Start the second layer on top of the first and continue to bake, spread chocolate and cool. Use a paper towel to smooth out the used aluminum foil and put it back on the cookie sheet to reuse. I usually have a third piece of aluminum foil in use so I have one batch in the over, one batch with chips melting/cooling and one batch being made into balls ready to go in the oven. I know these instructions sound complicated and too detailed, but hopefully they will save you the burnt cookie learning curve :o) -Rosalinda

HOLY SMOKES! I CAN POST TODAY! Merry Christmas Eve! From highalttransplant, I got a wonderful tree ornament made from her son (I think) which is now hanging on the tree. How thoughtful! She also sent an amazing amount of seeds including black hungarian pepper, cascabella pepper, patio red marconi pepper, sweet pickle pepper, chinese giant pepper, cherokee chocolate tomato, broadleaf sage, and Extra Curled Dwarf Parsley. I cannot thank you enough. Those are all new to me so I am very excited to get these planted. Thank you very much for your generosity and the wonderful new ornament/card. From bumblebee1, I got a great Santa card with garlic chives, calabrese broccoli, celery, and sparkler radish seeds. Thank you very very much - I am new to several of those and can't wait to get them started! From darlyn58, I got this old fashioned printed card with a horse pulling a trailer. Brings me back to the good ol' days. She also sent the most generous amount of danvers half long carrots. WOW. Thank you so much and Merry Christmas!

Rosalinda, you can take any cuttings you want from my diablo ninebark if you want. I don't think I have anything else on your list though.

I'm working on the evite now. I'm hoping to get it out within the next week or so, although now that I've said that, I've probably jinxed myself!

Thanks Brenda. I got a regular Brunnera from you last swap, but not Jack Frost. I keep the Cyperus in pot in a tub that I keep some water in, in my cool office building. I do hear they can be grown indoors like a regular house plant with plenty of water, but no standing water needed, but haven't tried it. Maybe I will have better luck with the cuttings this year. The Karl Rosenfeld sounds great also, if you can get some. I have a Taurus Rex for you, and hope I my Sutherland Gold survived the onslaught of the deer and rabbits.

I am way way behind on my gardening as I am spending all my time working on the house. I hope I will get some time soon to start gathering stuff for the Swap. It have been having a very difficult and stressful spring. Hopefully by the end of April things will improve!

Hi everybody. i'm really looking forward to this year's swap. I missed last year and regreted it.
This Year I'm bringing some pink epimedium, Walkers Low Nepeta (I have eight from fall's division.),and creeping St John's Wort. There are also a couple of rose of sharon, a burning bush and a Roxanne perenial geranium. (only one).

This year's tomato plants will include San Marzanos(a really terrific sauce tomato). Did I read that someone was looking for small veronica? I have one that's blooming right now and is a creeping variety.
I'm also dividing moonbeam coreopsis if anyone is interested.

This spring has been so delightful with everything blooming on top of each other. Please tell me it's gonna last.
ps If you want a peek of any of the above, LMK and I'll try to post a picture.

My two year old Helleborus are potted up. I have 5 or 6 that I will be bringing. Also a couple of starters of tall perennial Phlox and a golden raspberry.

Not sure what else I will have as all my young plants are struggling in the heat and just haven't been able to keep them watered ehough.

Just a quick post...I'm still madly weeding and mulching. Don't think I'm really gonna be ready this year!

Anyhow, I've got millions of lupine seedlings. If any one wants some, please let me know as I can't possibly pot them all up. Some other stuff I've got...

A few daylillies (can't remember the variety I have in that spot, but it's probably pandora's box or a red variety (the name escapes me))

Hi Everyone,
Well this year has SUCKED so far and my gardens and plants have not been any better.

Brenda I do have the Taurus Rex Begonia for you but the rabbits destroyed my Sutherland gold Sambucus. If I can get the little bit of it that is still alive to survive, maybe I can get some for you next year.

I am not bringing too much this year, and I did not get any peonies dug up as I planned - sigh. In fact NOTHING I planned has worked out, and you will all be subjected to my tale of woe and misery.

At least I have the swap to look forward to.....

I dug up a couple of clumps of Fountain Grass , ArmyPrincess was looking for some.

We crane the top half of my new house on Wednesday - wish me good luck as I sure need it!!!!

Tara, I've got tons of blue flax - I love it! It blooms for months and is so easy. Also have white and purple c. persicifolia.
