First Lychee Blooms of 2011
Comments (13)Bryan: I have not kept a separate log regarding lychee fruiting....although this Forum has now become my "log" so to speak. However, since I did not begin posting in this Forum until Fall of 2009, my posts only encompass one lychee season thus far. From memory, removing the post-Hurricane Wilma 2 year period (when canopies were severly compromised) my largest Kaimana tree had borne consitantly each and every year. Some years the crops have been heavier than others, but I would not classify it as an alternate bearer. Because I thought it was one of the best lychees I had ever tried, I planted out two other Kaimana trees. These trees are much smaller and neither has ever bloomed. Not sure why that is, but I am hoping that this year will begin blooming on one or both of those smaller trees. Stay tuned. Harry...See MoreMango Lychee Bloom Update
Comments (21)I have noticed lots of honey bees in the yard this year...seems more than usual. I'm with Gerry on the best overall fragrance being citrus blooms. I tolerate mango bloom smell and like lychee bloom smell. Its amazing to go out at night to see the number of moths with "glow in the dark" eyes that frequent the mango blooms, especially. The potential pollinators for mangoes here in Florida are incredibly diverse. I have seen many types of beetles, flies, lacewings, bees, wasps, moths, and butterflies. Honey bees are not supposed to be significant pollinators of mango, but this year I have found otherwise. Harry Harry...See MoreLychee Trees Update
Comments (85)bananafan, sorry to hear your Longan didn't do well. I guess somehow longan has more issues growing in Florida -- are you in FL? We in Southern Cal have an easy time with Longan -- i's so easy to grow beside being killed by the very cold below 29F winters. My longan is about 11 yrs old and was killed down to ground. I thought it was a goner and not even care to cut off the stump. Then one day in spring I saw a little thing -- looked like a seedling -- popped up. I opened up the soil to find out it's a seedling or from the death tree and sure enough it was from the deep root of the death tree. I dug up and moved it closer to the wall for protection and couple years later it was over 5 ft tall but skinny leg, then a very cold winter killed it down to ground level. This time I knew it would come back. Sure enough it did and the last 8 years we had no hard winter and now it reaches over 10 feet. Here is the top of the tree with flowers. The second photo is one of the horizontal branches....See MoreSo.Cali mango update April 2011
