I've been thinking about using similar fencing (I think it's field fencing) which is a little taller (around 4 feet - it comes in two heights) and which has holes big enough to stick your hand through. This fencing is available at certain Home Depot stores in agricultural areas, in 100 foot rolls which are quite heavy.

But I've been thinking about sandwiching my plants between two rows of staked fencing, so I don't have to tie the plants up. The Squarefoot Gardening book recommends something similar to this, but higher, extending tomato cage wire (hard to find now) higher with a second row of wire cut in half lengthwise, to make a "tomato hedge" of tall, indeterminate tomato plants. Fencing is kept 6 inches above the soil line to allow for easy weeding.

I might try arching a layer of fencing over the row rather than extending the fencing straight up on each side. Sunburn protection for tomatoes is called for part of the year here. With arched wire above the plants, I could easily throw some shadecloth over the row when the weather started to take a toll on the plants.

If you want to do two rows of tomatoes, maybe you could put one row of fencing down the middle and a row of fencing on the outside of each row of tomatoes. You could have a little tomato forest.

Check out concrete reinforcing wire by the roll.
It might be price competitive, and more convienient.

CRW has 6"x6" holes and is of heavy gauge.

Thats what I did last year... I've expanded my bed to 35' long x 4.5', but because of my experience last year, i'm keeping it to only one row.... I'm going to use the extra space for marigolds & basil.

My boyfriend installed 10' rebar every 8' and attached large wire fencing (not quite large enough to get a hand through... basically a permanent trellis.. the trellis is about 6.5' tall.

I planted way too close, and went crazy tying up trusses every single day... and on the occasions I messed up, whole frontal walls of tomatoes would come crashing down.

I'm going to try the sandwich method this year I think, but not with another permanet wall, but with some 4' high tomato cage fold out triangle things I found at Lowe's for $2 per.

Here's a pict of my wall last year, its hard to see, but the trellis is just about as tall as the 7' fence.

The field fencing I am eyeing is quite similar to concrete reinforcing wire (maybe not quite as heavy in guage, holes slightly smaller) but does not rust like concrete reinforcing wire. It's an advantage to be able to stick your hand through the fence and pull out a big tomato.

I like my welded wire mesh cages just fine but due to some expansion I'm thinking about trying a Florida Weave this yr.

Its cheap and a lot less to store for the off season.

The only downside I see to it is having to walk all the way down each row but that might be offset by being able to train them to fill the spacing between plants in the row though rows might need to be further apart to avoid too much shading.

Also thought about a tall over head cable with drops at the plants. Someone here uses that in a green house, not sure how that would be with wind.

We did something similar to the "Florida Weave" last year, and some of the tomatoes could not be harvested because they were squished between stems and leaves. But a double row of stakes could be used with a similar cross-over twine pattern. This would allow a little "wiggle room" for tomato growth.

Maybe Nick could use a triple row of stakes for his double row of tomatoes.
