Best place in KC to get veggie plants?

I'm from CA, I'm spoiled. I'm used to have the garden going by now. Not so here & I'm itching! I did locate a few cold weather plants & herbs at the local HD. I went to the local Grass Pad & they had a dismal selection of cold weather veggie plants & no herbs. HD was much better, ironically. IS there a nursery in KC that has a large selection of veggie plants, not right now but in April?

Best Places to find a variety:
- Family Tree Nursery (several locations OP, Shawnee and I think up North)
- Heartland Nursery at View High Dr and I-470 (Very South KC)
- Soil Service Garden Center at 72nd and Troost KC, Mo
- Farrand Farms - 5941 South Noland Road Kansas City, MO
For heirlooms you wont find elsewhere:
Brookside Farmers Market 63rd St And Wornall Rd KC, Mo
(look for Bear Creek Farms or KCCUA)

Places like Suburban or the Grass Pad really dont have much on selection for tomatoes. They are better "landscape" sources.

The best places for seed selections are Planters Seed in the River Market dowtown KC, Family Tree Nurseries (one in OP tends to have more) and Earl Mays (if there are any still around)

Heartland Nursery has one of the better selections of annuals and perennial varieties (that you wont find elsewhere) but like Family Tree tend to be a little pricey. They are both worth going and just seeing what they have though! Planters Seed is also a very interesting place.

Double ditto vote on Brookside Farmers Market. Daughter-in-law swears by them. Only been there 1x on a visit about 3 years back but was very impressed with the selection.

Rootdoctor, I companion-plant in wide raised beds, mostly for the benefit of tomatoes and mixed varieties of peppers. I've found garlic, onions (onion sets) and marigold are all helpful. Basil too, though it does sometimes shade the smaller pepper plants. Lettuce tends not to grow as well under the shade of the larger plants when they're mature, but it does well in the late spring if transplanted in along with the tomatoes and peppers. Though I haven't done A-B comparison tests, I believe the mixed plants also improve the flavours of the harvested foods. All the best, -Patrick

Here are a couple places you might check: The Evergreen YH that zeedman mentions has several things specifically listed as Korean: http://www.evergreenseeds.com/ AgroHaitai is another source of Asian seeds. I don't remember if they have anything noted as Korean, but there may be vegetables there your girlfriend knows of, just with a different name. Kitazawa Seed lists names for several of their vegetables in different languages. They also have a mail order catalogue, which might be easier to browse through.

We've used both the Clackamas 3-way and 4-way mixes for years for vegetables and trees. This time of year, a lot of wet, compressed clods can be in these mixes; try to break up as many clods as possible when putting the mix in the beds. Mt. Scott Fuel on SE Foster has soil mixes--one of them undercover, but I preferred the texture of the Clackamas mix last year.

I've planted many perennials, trees, and more in the fall. Great time for there is no harsh, hot and dry summer conditions. Plant wakes up in the spring like it has always been there. You will need to look at only US vendors as I seem to recall this plant is covered by CITES and import/export is strongly controlled. In looking at vendors be sure to look for how they get their plants. I would avoid wild collected over "farmed" plants - no sense in supporting the further depletion of wild plants. FataMorgana

+1 on Family Tree Nursery, Overland Park. I've purchased 99% of my plants there for several years.

I only had a problem with them once. Last year I picked up a couple of jalapeno plants that started out looking good, but by mid June had some sort of foliage damage. I thought it was probably something the plants had picked up after I planted them out. I yanked them (they really looked bad) and went back to the nursery to look for replacements. They still had a few pepper plants left, but all were showing the same type of foliage problem.

I'm guessing that these plants were sick when Family Tree received shipment. Luckily none of my tomato plants were affected.

I posted pics on the hot pepper forum... no one was sure what it was.

I still recommend them to friends. I've purchased many plants there and only had the one time problem.

I noticed on another post that you donate tomatoes to a couple places here in KC. Is there also a need to donate seedlings? I'm new to this area. I just ordered a bunch of heirloom seeds but will only use a few of each variety due to limited space. I'd love to start the rest of them & donate the seedlings. Thanks in advance!
