Is the red leaf lettuce sold in the markets Red Sails?
Comments (2)Yes there are several varieties of red leaf lettuce - I can think of 5 off hand - and what is in the store could easily be any of them. But Red Sails is a common home gardener variety and quite good. You can't go wrong with it IMO. Dave...See MoreGetting redness out of red leaf lettuce
Comments (8)I just Wanted to clarify a little more. I know your nutrient solution probably contains the mineral element that the plant needs to produce the color, but needs more to get the rich coloring your looking for. It could also be reducing the the amount of some mineral element/s in the nutrient solution that aid in the production of chlorophyll in the plants leaves will do the same thing. Whichever it is I don't really want to guess. As I mentioned, I would contact many nutrient manufactures. Your bound to reach someone familiar with growing red leaf lettuce, or at least know someone who does like a commercial grower they sell products to....See MoreI forgot the REDS - What are your favs?
Comments (12)No, Neves Azorean Red is not related to the variety Julia Child. What you might have read is that a few years ago Gary Ibsen at Tomatofest asked me if I had a great tomato variety that he could have and name for Julia Child. But he wanted exclusive rights to what I might have. I don't give exclusive rights to anyone for any variety I have. The variety I had which was and is a great variety is Neves Azorean Red which I listed in the SSE Yearbook and from there it went out to many commercial sites. I also asked for participation in helping name it here at GW and then sent seeds to all 22 folks who posted, and as I do with what I think are my better new varieties I sent seeds for trial to those commercial seed companies I feel comfortable with. Comments (4)Acer rubrum is described as having red petioles and 5 lobed leaves. If that's the case, I've got hundreds (thousands) of seedlings that are hybrids, repopulating several acres that used to be in grass. The majority of these trees have have greenish yellowish orangeish petioles, a few are red. The leaves vary from 3 lobed to 5 lobed, light to dark green. I believe Acer rubrum is a very variable species. I probably have some hybrids, silver maples are a popular shade tree here about....See Moredigdirt2
