Anyone know of a nursery that sells Cherimoya's that ships?

None of the FL nurseries seem to stock them because they don't fruit well down here but I want to give them a try just to see if I can get even a few fruit. Any help is appreciated.

I would look up some California nurseries. Ong's might carry them.

I checked with Ong's but he only had 5 gals so they are too large to ship.

The Lisianthus is difficult to find in nurseries because it is very tricky to germinate and raise from seed. I visited a farm that specialized in cut flowers this past season. The owner said that although Lisianthus made him the most money because of their near perfect, repeat blooms, it was extremely difficult to grow from seed and he dedicated/spent a lot of man hours raising them. His farm was named Skinny Dip Farm, in Westport, MA. I suggest giving him a call to see what works best for him, where he sources his plants, etc.

Jmmedeiros, As Plummy mentions, you can special-order LaVerne Nursery cherimoyas from many nurseries and garden centers. However, one peculiarity of LaVerne Nursery is that they do not specify the cultivar of their cherimoya plants -- the plants are sold simply as "cherimoya grafts". At least two different cultivars are sold by LaVerne under this imprecise label. I would suggest that you contact Roger Meyer at exoticfruit@95net.com. He sells bare-root cherimoyas through mail-order, and I think that this is just about exactly the season when he offers the plants this way. (I think he'll ship potted plants all year round.) You will probably get a lower price from him, and his trees will be properly identified by cultivar. While it may be possible to hold a cherimoya over in a pot for some time, it would be better to get it in the ground. It certainly should be possible for you to grow a cherimoya outdoors in Santa Clara, provided that you put it in a favorable microclimate in your garden. (E.g., against a house wall, at the top of a slope, etc.)

it's a bit strange that no FL nursery carries the manila mango. Many Armstrong and Home Depot here in San Diego carry manila. I got one from Armstrong.

Where are you located? I'm sure I have some extra seedlings. My big Cherimoya did fine during our freeze and has tiny fruit on it now. In Palm Beach County!

They grow easily from seeds.

Thanks for the offer Lisa, but I have a bunch of seedlings growing. I am looking for a few named varieties now. Which type do you have? Glad to hear that you are getting fruit from yours. Gives me hope. I am in Ocala, so I would think the humidity here is about the same that you see down there. I might have to hit you up for some budwood in the fall. These can only be grafted when they are dormant right?

It's odd but the CA growers tell me when the cuttings are dormant and the seedlings are vigorously growing, this is the best time to graft. I've tried when the seedlings were not really going at the time and all failed miserably. My current ones seem to be taking off so far.

I've had some seedlings in the past that did not care much for the humidity in the greenhouse. Most seem to be adapting to it now.

On a side note...I'm not one to normally hoot about store-bought fruit...especially any exotics coming to us here in Ohio. But I will stand up and yell loud that the cherimoya I had last night was freaking unbelievable! If someone would have even walked near me while I was eating, I probably would have growled and snapped at them. Damn, it was good. But at $4.49/lb, that just drives my wife crazy!

What kind of stores do you have up in Ohio that you find cherimoya's? Down here in FL I can't seem to find crap.

Jay, Did you store the dormant budwood in the fridge until spring to make it line up with the time that your seedling started growing?

Our local Meijer stores carry them. Only ones that seem to carry anything close to exotic. Not always good but now and again a prize is found.

Someone from the CA forum had some fresh cuttings he sent me...right on the verge of being too late. If Eggo was still around......
