Help! How to get rid of powdery mildew?

My tomato seems to have chronic powdery mildew, or at least that's what i assume it is (it gets white splotches on the leaves, which die a short time later).

The plant is still growing but half of it is dead because of this stuff!

I bought a spray that is supposed to get rid of powdery mildew, but I've used it on the plant several times and it doesn't seem to be going away.

Are there any recommended products for this or what can I do???

If you are doing overhead watering, stop it. Water at ground level in the morning, and try not to let any leaves get wet. (Rain, however, you can't avoid.)

When it comes to any sort of fertilizer and teeny new roses, LESS IS MORE. Newly-planted roses should not be fertilized until after their first flush of bloom. I'm sure people do it, but the results here have been disastrous. They DON'T need nitrogen at this stage. That would push top-growth and bloom production, which you don't want until there are roots to support it. Just keep 'em watered (not drowned, but watered) and protected from blasting sun. Remove any buds that form. Doing that will force the plant to grow roots, rather than topgrowth and bloom. And relax. Roses are pretty tough. That's why they've outlasted the dinosaurs. :-) Jeri

I have had PM on only a few violets, and I found Lysol disinfectant spray to work very well. If it is pretty bad, spray the Lysol into a container so you have just the liquid. Then take a q-tip, dip into the liquid, and paint the leaves with it. Change the q-tip often, and never use on more than one plant. You can also try spraying onto the plant, but be aware it will ruin the blossoms. The spray is very cold because of the aeresol, so you have to spray from sort of far away and let it drift down onto the plant. Barbara

Hey Stephanie, Congrats on getting a pumpkin per child! That is success despite your PM problems. I think the secret to a big pumpkin is first in the genetics. Mine is an Atlantic dill, but it was from a seed package bought at a garden centre. Next year I'm hoping to have seeds with lineage from a REALLY big pumpkin. Second is probably soil and sunshine. I made a pitching-mound sized hill for kine to grow on and it was made up of composted manure, soil, and peat moss. I prepped it in the spring since I'm in a new house, but this year I plan to prep in the fall for some super-fertility! We have very clayish soil here, and with the cool summer, I'm pretty happy with my results. As for fertiliser, I went with a high nitrogen fertile for the first part of the summer and then switched to a higher potassium and phosphate fertiliser later on combined with foliar seaweed spraying. Here's a picture of my pumpkin. It's the only one I happen to have on my phone and it doesn't have a reference for the size, but the pumpkin is about 75" in circumference now. I've cut back almost all of the leaves since the PM was taking over and because I wanted to re-seed the lawn I had ruined! Planning to harvest it soon.

I've never had PM on my catnip, but I used diluted milk on the PM that was on my zucchini and cucumbers this year. It did slow it down, but didn't stop it completely. Could you post a picture of your plant? I have two pots of catnip that I brought in for my cats. They have smaller leaves now due to less light, are sitting next to a small lamp with a compact flo bulb, and I have chicken wire cages wrapped around them to keep the cats from eating them down to the nubbin'. They keep the plants trimmed down to the cage. The plants also get 'very' dry between waterings, and we keep the apartment at least 70 degrees most of the time. Do you have catnip seeds? I would start some new plants in new medium asap for back-up in case the current one succumbs to the PM. HTH

Is milstop a spray or what?

And, no I'm not overhead watering it. The plant is in a pot and has a fairly large open spot on one side of the pot, so I add water there.

1. Cut out fertilizer.
2. Put a fan in the area where the plant resides.
3. Put the plants on the porch whenever the weather is in the 50's or above.
4. Wash your hands before you handle the plant. Don't smoke.
5. Cut your watering in half.

The real key is prevention.

Since it's so early, you might want to just start over. You aren't going to kill 100% of the spores on the plant, so it will continue to spread onto new growth. If you want to continue with this plant, remove all the dead and infected material, then replace the spore coated soil surface, and spray regularly.

what is milstop

MilStop is a broad spectrum, contact foliar fungicide that controls a variety of diseases on plants. You can search it by name to find vendors. Other similar products are also available at most garden centers.
