Kathy's gettin' married! Woo-Hoo! :O)

Congratulations, Kathy & Cliff!!

I was thinking...wouldn't it be WONDERFUL to let Kat know how happy we all are for her? Show her how much we all love her?

Since we can't all go support her & be at her wedding, I thought a virtual wedding shower would be nice.

OMG, I'm already in tears missing those quilts! I did a letter to her explaining what she was receiving. It started with, "Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Enclosed is a gift for you that comes from my heart--three quilts that were made by my great grandmother, my grandmother, and my aunt. They have been entrusted to me for the last 30+ years and now I'm entrusting them to you." The letter ended with, "I sincerely hope you enjoy these quilts ... they are pieces of history created by women for their families." Why am I so upset? I can't stop crying. Those quilts mean so much to me and NOW I worry???? I'm sure it's ok. I've just had them for so long.

What a lovely idea-- wish I'd thought of it for my BFF oh so many years ago. They also went to Ireland for their honeymoon (and just returned from their third trip). In addition to the oxalis, I'd consider including lavender also. If either of them are irish themselves, you could use their family tartan-- some are absolutely lovely (some, not so much lol). You could also incorporate celtic knots, pint glasses, lace and linen. Of course, you could lean a bit more to the irish tavern style-- drop the lace and make some sort of tavern sign incorporating their soon-to-be shared last name... something like O'Malley's Pig Snout Tavern.. Flannery's Black Sheep Tavern.. etc. I've seen some great chocolate stout recipes.. and not sure where you'd get it but I found stout ice cream *very* rich and interesting. It would make a great adult sundae with chocolate or fudge sauce. Champagne and green punch are good ideas-- but I'd be inclined to serve Shandy's and perhaps other irish cocktails. Looking forward to seeing how you pull this together!

Wedding gift for Boston wedding - anyone know current customs?

I honestly don't know anything about what would be an appropriate gift in Boston. In fact, as far as Houston (where I've lived my whole life), AFIK there's no "custom" gift. Not that I'm up on all that stuff!! The thing is, I give what I feel comfortable giving rather than trying to figure out what the couple expects or what the local tradition might be. If money is the custom there, they'll already be getting a lot of checks. Why not make your gift one of the few personal items that stand out and get remembered? I have a few quotes below from a very wise person who frequents this forum. See if you can figure out who said all this: When I got married, I did not have enough experience to know what would REALLY come in handy as my family and entertaining needs grew. Even then, I could see the difference between the gifts our peers gave us -- "unique," fun, or short-term stuff (e.g., a bed tray and a subscription to a book review) -- and the things the "grown-ups" got us: serving pieces, carving board, tablecloths, dishes, flatware, etc. We liked and appreciated all of it, but I could see the older generation had the better idea, and theirs are the gifts I am still gratefully using almost 26 years later. Registries tell me colors, styles, etc. I often give a silverplate water pitcher (there's an example of something you don't know you'll need but never have enough of, if you entertain). I look at the couple's registry to decide whether to choose a very simple or more ornate style. Not many young couples need giant serving platters or dishes, flatware, and crystal for 12 or 18. But years later, when they start to take their turn hosting holiday meals and family get-togethers -- for a family that will probably be getting larger -- they are going to need all that stuff -- at least many people do. Twenty-six years ago, I never imagined serving 29 people dinner in my home. But that is what we are doing tomorrow! So even though at the time it seemed like we would never use all the platters, bowls, and pitchers, I have used every one of them many times over the years. The nicest bonus is that every time I use the "boring" items, even all these years later, I think fondly of the person who gave it to me. That is a very lovely experience you don't get if all you get is cash or things you registered for yourself. My favorite gift was a big, fancy silver plate platter from my great aunt. She had received it as a wedding gift when she married into our family in the 1950s. I certainly didn't have occasion to use it much in the early years of our marriage, but I use it all the time now, and I think of her every time I see it. This is probably more a matter of local and ethnic custom than anything else. In many communities the northeast, for example, it seems that cash gifts are so customary that "thing" gifts are unusual (for wedding gifts \-\- these people also often give very large "thing" gifts for engagements and showers). But several posters who live in the south have reported that in their communities cash gifts are considered impersonal to the point of being a no\-no. Both are common here. I prefer to give a "thing" gift, but that's just my preference.

I won't need a wrap. I can count on my hot flashes to keep me warm. Planning to wear black boots, knee high. I know not everyone will agree with that, but it works for me. They are dressy, not cowboy boots. I have a blue necklace that I got in Switzerland years ago that I will probably wear. The blue looks off in this pic, but you'll have to trust that it's the right blue. It looks almost white here, but it is light blue. Also, for anyone following my earlier MOG dress saga. I am wearing my "original" MOG dress to a wedding in a few weeks. Since I wasn't in love with the rhinestone that was sewn to the V in the neckline, I carefully removed it so I could wear a funky/blingy necklace instead.

You guys are wonderful! This is going to make an amazing addition to my wedding album!

Well, the original plan was to to go Ochos Rios, Jamacia for a week. Cliff's Mom was going to gift us with the trip. But then Cliff's car got to where it was dangerous for him to drive it for work (he's a rural postal carrier and has to supply his own vehicle) so, we got him a new van. His Mom went ahead and gave us our wedding gift early, enabling us to comfortably pay the tax, title and tags on the van.

So, we're hoping to go to a hotel at least for a night or two, but the trip will have to wait until later.

As it is, the gown I was planning to wear there has been an issue with, so with 17 days to go, I'm frantically hunting out a different gown to wear. :( Since I can't have the one I wanted (the shop sold it!) I'm thinking to go with a lace dress with a handkerchief hem and my natural leather colored mid calf laced cowboy boots. If I can find a dress like that as quick as I have to.

I love it! Wish you lived closer - the local western store has one in the window that is to die for! Yes, I love wedding's - they are just to much fun...

To bad about Cliff's car but it is good that he has something safe to drive & it has enough room for the family. Maybe the 'new' grandma will entertain the kids and the 2 of you can go away for an extended weekend, when you really need a break? LOL

Well.. I found a gown.. nothing like the one I described earlier LOL! I'll try to get some pictures taken this afternoon and post them :)

I don't have any pictures of his Mom's backyard (that's where the wedding will be) but I'll try to get some this evening.

Cliff and I went shopping for the other things I needed for the wedding... cake pans, guest book, etc. I'm tired now! And we're meeting this afternoon with the minister and the photographer.

Again, i want to thank you all for this! It will be a really wonderful thing to add to my wedding album!

Thanks for the compliments, Marie! I love the dress! It's really much more lovely than the one I was originally going to wear. And it fit me perfectly - off the rack! I NEVER get to buy anything off the rack without having to alter it! I'm all of 5' even and God saw fit to be rather generous with my upper torso, so I usually have to have things altered for them to fit well. It's actually part of the reason I've become rather good at alterations. Yes, I did make my bouquet:) I'll take pictures of the other things I've made for the wedding as well and post them. I know that several of my friends have been wanting to see them :)

Your rings & that Rose arch way are beautiful! Love the pic's of your 2 boys and your Boston, sooooo cute :) I had one for 18 years, they are the sweetest dogs, snarf's and all! Mine's name was: 'Lord J. R. Woofinstein' ~ Jr. for short and he thought he ruled the world. LOL

LOL, Snarf is a big baby and very spoiled! He's Mama's boy. I named him after Snarf from the Thundercat's cartoon because the character always sniffled, snorted, snuffled, etc. And Boston's certainly do that! He has the most gorgeous brindling all down his sides and back.

Cliff's Mom's place is absolutely gorgeous! I love being out there. I didn't show the pictures of the water/shade garden in the front. I'll find that and add it into the slideshow. It's really pretty!

The first time I saw that arch her gardens were in bloom and I thought "What a lovely spot for a wedding". Keep in mind, as far as I was concerned, it wasn't gonna be mine, ya know? Cliff can be rather persuasive. :) His Mom is thrilled with our marriage and with us wanting to have the wedding there. She's really gotten into the spirit of the theme :) She came up with the idea of buying burlap to use as tablecloths with a denim runner and bunching denim into rosettes for the tables :) I have no idea what we're going to use 15-20 yards of burlap for after the wedding, but she's picking that up Monday :) And they are buying and cooking the briskets, while I'm doing the chicken. Cliff's sister and Uncle Ed are making homemade BBQ sauces. I got to taste Uncle Ed's last night when we drove 100 miles to be at his 60th b-day party. It's amazing!!

Everyone is really excited about the wedding. I think everyone's going to have a lot of fun. The main emphasis is going to be on the reception and all of the family being together, something that doesn't get to happen often.

Thank you all for the wonderful wishes! Cliff and I have very much enjoyed reading all of them! And he, like I did, thought it was a wonderfully amazing thing that you all thought to do this for me!

Updates- JJ's graduation went off wonderfully. My first ex-husband and his wife came up for it and are now (thankfully) gone back home. My foster daughter, Charlene, who is actually his sister that I've raised for 21 years, decided to move back with them to be nearer her mother, who's in bad health. It was rough, but I know she'll be happier. :)

Wedding plans- Well, this week I'm cooking the food- grilled chicken, potato salad, the cakes. Other family members are handling the brisket, BBQ sauces, baked beans and coleslaw and drinks. So, for the rest of this week, I'll be mostly MIA. Everything is going wonderfully! It's all coming together, aside for the 30 % chance of rain they're calling for :( So, everyone keep your fingers crossed! 70 people in my almost mother in law's house would be a tight fit despite that it's a large house!

Neither Cliff nor I are having any nerves. We're both getting really excited, which we didn't really expect because we already consider ourselves married :)

I have a few last minute errands to do, like finding my 10 yr old's cowboy boots. Oddly, I'm having trouble finding a youth size 5 for him- in Oklahoma!

We're testing the hairstyle I've chosen tomorrow :)

Family members are starting to make it in. Cliff's sister Heather and her husband got here Sunday and I finally got to meet the woman I've been emailing and IMing with for the last few months. We're going to be really good friends, I think :) We'll be at Cliff's Mom's friday to get the bulk of the decorations done, then everyone's going out for a combined party, to have a few drinks and enjoy adult time without children. It's gonna be an early night so that we can all be up early Saturday to put the finishing touches on the decorations.

Four more days!
