Well if you get them out of the septic rubble and plant them in good soil, no fear of contamination. If they came from hybrid seeds, you could get some interesting results. I would grow one of them just out of curiosity.

Back then, I would just buy some Better Boys or whatever from local nursery that has never heard of heirlooms.

Wow, what a dork I was back then.

Anyway, those fruit really would not be worth growing out. Or eating. I knew that when I posted this, there would be some responders that would say, "Hey, what's wrong with eating them?" And while they might be technically correct.... eeeew.

But if I did grow it out.... I would call it Colonic Survivor. :)

Though Better Boys are a hybrid, I've heard that some folks do save the seed and have grown it out successfully with good results, I saved some, but am wary about trying to grow it out. I think it would be interesting as well :)

At least you're not the first person in history to have tomato plants growing out of sewage (putting it THAT way makes you realize how disgusting the situation really is...).
I read in a tomato book about a guy who used sewage as fertilizer for his lawn and got thousands of tomato plants (come on, that's WAY better than green grass :) ) growing on his lawn.
Didn't really excite his enthusiasm about tomatoes, though.

I had better boys pop up from seed last year in the garden. I let them grow and the tomatoes were big and beautiful but they were mealy and nasty; BLAH! It was from a tomato that dropped in the garden from the season before, not from the method mentioned here.

Tomato poop?

I remember my ex father in law telling me in his old outhouse when he was a boy they would move the outhouse spot each year and plant tomatoes in the "Leftovers" He said they were the best tomatoes he ever had in his life....*Gag*...But hey, I guess if you can get past the old human poop part your golden!

I remember the piles of sludge at the sewer treatment facility in my hometown always were covered with tomato vines.

In many 3rd World countries all the produce is fertilized with humanure either directly or from sewer treatment facilities.

You can turn your nose up at it all you want here, but the fact remains, much of the produce you buy during the winter came from 3rd World sources where humanure is applied as a regular fertilizer.
