Update on my Brewster Lychee

My Brewster Lychee was doing well until the wind and rain came yesterday and they had really no mercy on the fruit that were forming. Some of them had even reached two third the length of my thumb nail.

This is the aftermath of the havoc. It's sad to see all the lost. I'm wondering if the fault is all caused by the wind and rain, or is it the fact that some fruit just have to be naturally eliminated to make way for the healthier ones? Fortunately, there are still some intact. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for no more eventful days ahead.

OMG...I'm SO sorry!! That is SO heartbreaking to see...I sure hope the rest that's on the tree makes it to maturity.

As far as whether wind and rain was the main culprit for the fruits falling...I'm guessing that had a lot to do with it, but I'm sure survival of the fittest plays a major role in there also. I have a LOT of small fruits that have fallen from my mango trees last year. This year I have very little fruit set so the loss is not as significant. I have a second bloom now..but not looking for much with those since its so late in the season :o(

My Mauritius tree has a cardinal bird nest...so I'm trying really hard to not bother her too much, lol...so I haven't checked to see how many of my fruitlets have fallen due to this rain/wind that we had as well...

Yes, Pug, I do also think it's the wind and the rain that knocked them down. Yesterday I went to look and there was only a couple of fruitlets on the floor after I picked up all of those lost ones. I know .. it's very sad, but what can you do except to wait for those that stayed to turn out well.

I'm glad you have Cardinals nesting in your Mauritius. They're such pretty birds and sing well too. We have lots of them in our yard. A couple of years, we had two nestlings, but they were either knocked down by strong winds or attacked by the other predator birds like the Blue Jays.

Thanks for the fruit forum you've mentioned. I've looked at some now and then, but I didn't bother to sign in. I usually get distracted lol.

Brewster here is about 10-12 ft tall. What I'm most puzzled about is the blooms aren't completely open yet. They have been that way for the past weeks. I have spotted web balls wrapped around some of the blooms, but fortunately not a lot. I tried to pinch off the affected parts as much as I can, although I also notice some huge ants crawling all over them. I can use some advice here if you know why. I thought maybe it needed water, so I water it thoroughly yesterday.

js,thanks for the compliment. Your tree is really nice! It has a very nice shape. Once it gets going you will have a very nice tree. I just love it when I see those little new growths appear. For only being planted for 2 weeks, it is doing very well and super healthy. Here is a picture of what mine looked like when I planted it April 07. It was very lanky and sparse. I like the shape of yours much better. It has a very nice shape. Just my two cents, use a slow release fertilizer, for me this keeps the fertilizer burn to a minimum. I still get some leaf tip burning, but not as bad as some of the other types of fertilizer out there. I also use fish/kelp once a month to supplement after the new growths hardens off. I read it was best not to fertilize when they are flushing,best to wait till the new leaves starts to hardened to prevent new leaves from fertilizer burn since they are very sensitive. Also they are very sensitive to wind, anything over 15 mph can do damage to new leaves. There's great articles on lycheesonline.com Good luck! Looks GREAT Banana...I think you will definitely have some to try this year!! I agree that Lychee trees are a little on the finicky side...between getting them to grow, blooming and actually fruiting and to keep some to maturity is a challenged,lol..So much work and anticipation for so little reward. Hopefully, if mine survives the next few winters mine will get large enough it will become a better producer as it matures? I have one or two starting to turn color on my Mauritius...I hope the squirrels or birds don't get it? I have so few I'm afraid I won't get to try any... I'm thinking of putting a mesh fruit bag I made to try and keep them away? Best of luck to us both...

tammysf,I went to mimosa nursery in anaheim and they had a lot of lychees and they were blooming and some actually had fruits on them.they sell them in 3gal 7gal & 15gal.I got emperor this week from florida but the plant was only 2 foot tall.I will get a brewster this week from them.They had longan tree that is also fruiting,they had several different kind of mangos also.

Thanks for the picture of the mama cardinal nesting...its adorable! I hope the babies make it all the way till they fly on their own, I love cardinals!!
