Mail order state use taxes for rose purchases?
Comments (18)I couldn't resist. I am a state tax policy geek. Questions about the nonsensical nature of Internal Revenue Code aside, no federal tax applies because there has been payment for the good. Sales tax is typically collected and remitted by the seller in those states that impose a sales tax. Currently, because of a U.S. Supreme Court decision by the name of Quill, states cannot compel a seller to collect sales tax unless the seller has a physical presence in the state (nexus). Many businesses use this to avoid tax...and while the customer benefits in the short term, states lose out long term including local businesses who can't fairly compete. Most states have a complimentary use tax, meaning state residents are supposed to pay use tax if no sales tax was paid (with a credit for other state sales taxes paid). As a practical matter, states generally only collect use tax from businesses in an audit situation. Personal purchases are too hard and expensive to pursue from an administrative perspective. That said, we states do appreciate those who voluntarily submit use tax in compliance with state law:-)....See MorePlant Mail Orders
Comments (76)Received my Cedar Hollow order of three roses on Friday. They were polestar, Dr. Merckley and what was supposed to be lambert Closse but instead was polareis. I must say that the customer service at Cedar Hollow is wonderful because I was not going to worry about it but was contacted by Cedar Hollow and asked if the right rose was sent out and if not they would send it out at no charge. Now I have to find a spot for lambert closse as I put the polareis in the spot that I had for it....See MoreCurtator's Choice Mangoes(Fairchild Botanical Gardens)
Comments (19)It is hard to describe flavors. It was very sweet and firm and delicious - dunno where the "lemon" part of the name came from. Far as Indian or Asian, I am not that versed in mangoes. Just know what I like - tasted a few that I didn't care for. That patented new "Coconut xxx" was even better. I asked if the tree was hardy and she said it was. I also got a Julie for a friend, and a Pickering and Fairchild for myself. Never tried them, but heard the Pickering has cocunut flavor so nothing ventured, nothing gained. Also a Munro avocado. Years ago when first moved here planted all kinds of tropical fruit trees, now all gone. Just couldn't resist getting some trees when mine didn't give me much fruit this year. Sorry, I know this doesn't really help. Taste is subjective. E.g. the Zill lady said she thinks the Julie is not very good and that they taste much different (better) in the islands than in Florida. BTW, they are very nice folks there....See MoreBest Mango Varieties for San Diego County, Calif Area?
Comments (12)Hello Patty, my mangoes are doing pretty good and I have never sprayed them with any fungicide or insecticides. My backyard is extremely humid( I'm about 5-10 miles from the ocean, as the crow flies)and we get frequent thick fog that makes my backyard look like it just rained. Ong's nursery does sell a lot of these varieties and if you buy several plants from him at one time, he(or his mom) may give you a discount. If Quang is there, tell him I recommended you to see him and he may give you an additional discount. Mickey from Plantogram is also a great person to order plants from and he will sometimes send you pictures of the trees before you purchase them. If you calculate in the shipping and phyto cert, its is still cheaper to get the plants from Ong's nursery. I have seen only a few larger specimens of mango trees in my area and many of them are seedling mango trees. Leo Manuel of CRFG had many grafted varieties of Mangoes in his backyard but he only had a few larger trees and they were still much smaller than an avocado tree. Mango trees in SoCal get killed back every several years when we get a hard frost. You will be lucky to get a mango tree to grow very large here. If you check out Exotica, they have some mangoes planted in the ground that are pretty old but I wouldn't say they are large. I'm actually trying to get my mango trees to grow very large by planting seeds directly into the ground so that their taproot will go deep. I will then graft a named cultivar onto the seedling in hopes of producing a grafted mango that will actually grow large here. I even grafted an additional rootstock onto my Maha Chanook Mango tree in the hopes that having two rootstocks will make the tree more vigorous. I will try to upload some pictures when I get some time. Simon...See Moremullenium
