Growing Tomatoes

Tomato plants with white edged leaves

I planted several tomatoes indoors, where they get lots of indirect light, and a bit of afternoon direct sun. They have been growing very well, and are even starting to blossom, but the leaves on two of the tallest plants have begun to have a thin white edge that looks dead or dying. What have I done?

Potting mix or soil in the containers?
Any fertilizer? If so what, how much and when?
Any sort of treatments?If so,what & when?
Any chance of pictures. They might ease our strain.

So these are actual plants, not young seedlings, right?Given that tomatoes need 6-8 hours of direct sun a day I'd say that is your problem right there. Too little sun = too little photosynthesis = too little chlorophyll.

Hi - I am no expert (I am having my own problems as well) but is there a chance that it could be sunburn? If there was a string of sunny days before the edges started turning brown, and the plants were indoors previously, I think that could be a possibility. Good luck and green growth to your leaves!

I'm only watering if the ground is completely dry. But for the past week or so it's required watering every morning. The fertilizer is supposed to be applied about every 10 days which I'm currently doing so I don't think there's too much fertilizer on the plants.

Becky, I don't see white spots on the leaf edges nor curled leaves indicating a lack of water. Lack of water is usually seen as wilting of the foliage. And if the white spots weren't just on the edges of the leaves if it were me I'd be thinking of one of the two powdery mildews. Carolyn

Focus on SALT in every form. Too much fertilizer, soil with salt buildup or water (especially if you have a softening unit) are all potential sources. Many things could contribute, even a well meaning spray or any mineral taken up by the plants in higher amounts. When you mention leaves on the tallest plants are these leaves affected high or low on the plants? Typically higher leaves (newer growth) damaged indicate toxocity of a more mobile nutrient.
Light might be a factor but is usually expressed as an overall lighter green color.
