Desperate - Nyctanthes Arbor-Tristis - Parijat - Never bloomed??

I bought Nyctanthes Arbor-Tristis (Indian Night Jasmine, Parijat) from Logees 9 years ago. It has been sitting in a pot (repotted progressively to bigger pots) for so long and been eaten up by SF bay area weather. It has been a trooper and survived. But it is only 2 feet tall and has never flowered (the size worries me). In desperation, I have now planted it in a sunny spot in my front yard. Is there any hope for this plant or should I just toss it and buy another? Any and every opinion is most appreciated!

That's wierd I got one from the same place and mine blooms in the spring and then again in the late fall when the nights cool off. It is about 6 feet now. I just potted up to about 3 gallon size this spring and its got roots growing into the ground lol. I have it under an eave where it can't get too much rain. I water it and try to let it dry out a little between waterings.

It gets sun most of the day with some late afternoon shade and seems to like the heat. I give it bloom booster in the fall and spring when it flowers otherwise it just gets reg. miracle grow or whatever I'm feeding the rest of the plants.

The flowers are easy to miss. When they flower you might not even notice unless you are looking for them. They fall off at daybreak as soon as the sun hits them unless its really cloudy and they open up after dark. Each flower only lasts a day unlike Night blooming jasmine (cestrum nocturnum) in which each flower can last several days (opening at night and closing during the day). The fragrance is similar for both plants but the Nyctanthes is not as strong as the Cestrum Nocturnum so unless you are close to the Nyctanthes when it is flowering you might not notice.

I am desperately looking for this plant. Logees doesn't carry it any more. Any other suggestions? did your plant bloom yet?

HI Dhanu, I really admire your inspiration and determination to grow Parijata. I have planted 3 saplings about 15 days back in big pots and really hoping to see Parijata flowers one day! when will that day come? what care should I give them? Any spl fertilizer to be used? Thanks. I wonder how large the seeds will be? I will probaby plant them shallowly after I follow your method. I don't know how long they take to flower from seed. I have tried to root it before but not much luck. I am gonna try again in the spring. I got my plant from zone9tropicals. They send a pretty good sized plant for the price. They are out of stock right now but you can ask them when they would have them again. Several yrs ago I had one that I bought at Logees. They don't list it in the catalog any longer but I know that they may still be growing them and may sell them if you email them. That is how I got mine. They sell them in very small pots though.

Tom. thanks! All my larger hoya's ever seem to want to do is grow. I think I know why. When they are inside all winter, they slow bad drastically, then when I put them back out, they just grow like weeds. Ha. I think mines just like to skip the flowering stage. Ugh. I can't believe you remember that about the Cycnoches. I still have that one but have not been able to keep it happy to the point of blooms. I think on that one it needs a very dry period or cold? Not sure. It did seem to start to get bloom nubs after leaving it alone for the months of winter, but I decide to water because I was afraid it would wither and die, and then the buds never developed((. Instead , it grew a new cane shortly after. This latest one, the one you have too seems to like Cattalaya care, always warm and does not mind being watered, no rest period required to flower, at least I hope..)0) I think that is what I read. If you got yours to flower by caring for it as you described above, then that is what I will do. Is yours kept outside all year? Spider mites? I had no idea. Thanks for the heads up)) Mike

Then, you'll have something that looks like this below. Then you hold that so the torn bit is at the top, and then - see how it's bent or ridged down the middle? - you want to bend the seedpod towards yourself gently - bending the sides in horizontally along that vertical axis, if that makes sense? - until you hear a crack. I am not explaining very well, but say that seed in prior photo is an open book, with the ridge as the spine. Well you are bending the way you would close a book. I'll bet there is a term for this and someone here will know it. The motion is a little like breaking off a Kitkat, only smaller and more gently. (I think this whole procedure would be tough if you don't have long fingernails. Just saying.) You just want it to crack - don't actually close the book.

Just in case anyone else comes across this thread, I've found that if you cut this plant back at the beginning of spring, that it flowers much more profusely. It seems to bloom way better on new growth.

I am trying to root some cuttings. It is really hard to root for some reason. I tried last year and they all died lol. Some seemed like they were taking but then I lost them. Grr..

Zone9tropicals.com used to sell this plant as well. Maybe if you emailed them they might either have it or know where to get one.

Also, Logees doesn't list it in their catalog but I got one once by emailing them and they rooted it for me. No clue if they still do this.

Let me know if you would like to buy it. I had bought 2 from Logees but due to my travelling job, its been difficult to care for it. its grown 2.5 feet after pruning/shaping it. luffykun27@gmail.com

Once I got the hang of it, they turned put to be fairly easy to root from cuttings. I think they have become more common in the United States now.
