Atascosa, nice set up. I like the tags up at eye level. No need to crawl around under the plant to find a small label. Looks like you went out in the dark to get a photo. Thanks for the label idea. I think I'll copy that this year.

Odeed, yours looks so neat and tidy. Maybe that will inspire me to get to work outside. Still at least 6 weeks before I should think of transplanting. And it will take at least that long to get the area looking anywhere near as nice as yours.

Congrats on the "hard rain". I'm just a stones throw north of you and all we've seen latley is "hardly rain". In spite of that things are still looking pretty good so far. I'll try to post some pics later this afternoon.

Hey Bryan..Cibolo isn't too far away from me,,where did you get your straw mulch from? All I have available out here is hay and too many seeds to use that stuff..I've been using mulched wood but that stuff takes forever to decompose..

That's weathered/aged hay you are looking at( I bought this couple of bales last fall and used them for the Halloween display and I spread it over the beds during the winter after I had worked in a cover crop and added a bunch of leaves). I get my alfalfa and coastal hay from the New Braunfels feed store. I have never had problems with weed seed or herbicide contamination from this source.
From all the dire warnings I have read about hay mulch I have not seen an issue since I began using it and adding it to my soil and compost and mulching with it. I am thinking that the quality of the hay is very important. High quality horse hay is usually very clean. Of course I have seen those hay fields that are mostly Johnson grass too!!
I also use pecan shell mulch. you can get it for around $16-17 a yard at the maldonado nursery in new braunfels. Pecan shell mulch not only makes a great mulch I think of it as a soil builder. Many of the processed shells still have bits of pecan in them.

Yes Kristi, that's an electric fence. I have dogs that dig and fences that bite.

Looking good Brian. I use pecan mulch too but it's pecan leaves mostly. The soil that is in the onion bed is rich in pecan shells. I bought that soil from Gardenville a few years ago.

Gardenville has some nice soil mixes. I have lazy dogs that don't dig.

It's heartening to see other South/Central Texas folks :D (I'm in Austin but visit SA regularly). Hah, actually, Bryan, I am wondering if I've visited that neighborhood. Also, that's some great advice on the hay and pecan shell mulch-- I will have to see if anyone in or closer to Austin has a deal as good as that on the mulch.

Odeed-- you're making me miss California a little! Sounds almost like sacrilege coming from Texas, but I grew up just south of you in the Mojave desert and my first memories of gardening were of my mother growing tomatoes and squash in our backyard there. Who would have thought that you can happily grow fruit in such fiercely hot and dry conditions?
