What is that white stuff on it?? Does it wash off?? I have mine in filtered light most of the day with a bit of morning and afternoon sun. These are one of the hardiest Dracaenas because their leaves are not as soft as the rest. I would make sure the soil is nearly dry before watering. Ed

Some more light might be helpful, but in my experience this palm doesn't require a lot of light when in semi-dormancy. I have a good-sized one in about a 12-inch pot that goes outdoors every year, and spends winter in the basement on the floor between two three-shelf fluorescent light stands. There's not a whole lot of illumination there, but it does OK (little growth, but no frond yellowing) with less watering than it gets when in active growth. If you can't provide adequate sun for your Chinese fan palm, consider watering it only when the soil has begun to dry out and stop fertilizing for the winter.

Yes. Doxocopa butterflies do use Celtis sp. as their larval host. However, Peale was unaware of the host when he constructed this painting around 1873 to 1885. The larval host wasn't known for nearly a century later. His journal notes state the butterfly flies so high that there is little opportunity to watch their behavior closely. A Cuban collector eventually sent to him the adults seen in the illustration. Peale had visited Colombia and Brazil in 1830s and 1840s. We suspect he recycled a sketch of a plant that he made from one of the earlier trips to South America. (The general shape of Celtis iguanaea is similar to the plant in the illustration, but its thorny stems and alternate leaves likely exclude it.)
