good 'seedless' tomato for North Texas

Can anyone recommend a tasty, easy to grow seedless tomato for me? It's too late now to start from seed, so it would need to be one easily available for purchase.

There are very few "seedless" varieties. And what few exist are relatively new hybrids and seldom grown as transplants for sale. Simply not enough demand for them and the seeds are often more expensive. So you would have to grow your own plants from seed. Oregon Spring is one that gets mentioned. Legend is another. It has some seeds but they are easily removed before eating.

You best bet would be any of the so-called "few seeds" roma or paste varieties. Again not commonly sold as transplants at least around here, but some are available. In non-paste types look for Mortgage Lifter, Goliath, or any with "heart" in the name.

It sounds like that with the circumstances you have described and with proper care, you could grow just about any tomato that strikes your fancy. Those already mentioned are easy and dependable as a general rule, but if you want to try some bigger tomatoes or slicers etc, just peruse the catalogs or online catalogs and pick out what sounds good to you. You can probably find a pretty good selection on the racks at the box stores and nurseries and the same when the plants come in to be sold. Most of the varieties of plants you will find for sale locally will grow pretty well locally with good soil, season, adequate water and care. Try a few new ones each season and find the ones that you like best. Bill P.

It's supposed to freeze here, too. 14 tomato plants. Assorted peppers and herbs. Five roses in various stages of potting. I found out too late to do much more than water and hope. At least most of them are on the south side of the house. For my fall tomatoes I'm ordering a bunch of seeds online and making extra plants. With my luck, it'll snow in July!

Calloways carries the Chef Jeff transplants - varieties like Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, Brandywine, Aunt Ruby's German Green, Arkansas Traveler, and others. Other possible locations might include Mike's Garden Center and Redentas. You may even be able to find varieties like Cherokee Purple at places like Lowe's if you luck out. Calloway's Redenta's (do a google search for Mike's to get phone #/locations, not sure if they have a website) I'd suggest you call around (let your fingers do the walking) before driving to a bunch of places. Of the ones mentioned, Calloways usually had the best selection when I lived in the metroplex, but that might have changed. A good time to plant in your area would be the second week of March, subject to the long range forecast. You might have to take it to the third week if there is a night in the 30's forecasted. A little trick I learned to have good, early fruit and also extend the harvest was to plant several in containers starting as early as mid-late Feb. That way you have the ability to put those plants in the garage/shed when cool nights threaten. Good luck, and I hope you find some really nice plants. :) Should you decide to start from seeds in the future, Jan 15 or even earlier is a good time to start (too late to start from seed for this spring). You can start everything you list except tomatoes. I would buy plants for those because they need to be mature enough to set fruit before the heat gets too bad. You can also start beans, dill, cilantro, basil. When it warms up you can plant okra and black-eyed peas. I'd buy green pepper plants instead of trying seed too. Sorry about the frost wiping out your plants. We had golf ball sized hail which didn't do my garden any good either, not to mention the skylights and roof! Texas weather.

I've seen paste types for sale around here in the past. I'll look for the others. I hadn't planned to grow anything this summer, then my doctor mentioned that there are seedless tomatoes available, and that the homegrown ones actually have some flavor.

As to why the seedless, I have had severe diverticulitis problems in the past, including 5 weeks in the hospital last summer. I know that several studies show that seeds and nuts aren't as big a problem as believed, but I'm just not willing to take the chance.

For what it's worth, my surgeon said that the biggest problem food he's seen is popcorn, but that blueberry seeds are OK.

I don't have the digestion issue, but the seeds get stick in my molars. So I use a grapefruit serrated spoon to de-seed. I think the less seed ones are dryer( paste like)...so I just scoop out.

Burpee has a new seedless hybrid out. Can't vouch for its quality but I saw seedlings at Target. I think that Oregon Spring and Legend are only seedless early in the season, when they can set fruit without pollination.
