fertilizing vegetable seedlings?
Comments (3)Most purchased potting soils have fertilizer included to keep the plants going for a good while. Seedlings should be fertilized very cautiously if you fertilize them at all. Its is much more likely that seedlings would die of fertilizer burn than from nutrient deficiencies in any but the most deficient soils. Additionally, excessive fertilization -- especially excess nitrogen -- can lead to the problem of all leaves and no fruit....See MoreNew lawn questions
Comments (10)I don't have any good before pictures but if you peer through the windows you can see some of what I was working with. The third picture is my old lawn this year. I never had to water it. I just mowed high and mulch mowed all the leaves I could find. The leaves that I collected that I could not mulch in I composted and would periodically scatter over the lawn all year before mowing. If I went out at night with a flash light the ground would be crawling with earthworms. Like 5 or 6 a square foot. I had also had two dogs on that lawn. They hardly ever pee burned the grass and the poops would be gone in about a week. It was a fantastic microherd in that lawn. The last picture is the same lawn the year before from a the opposite direction. You can see my old dick neighbors lawn with all his weeds. I guess I am going to have to make multiple posts for the pictures This post was edited by oliverjround on Fri, Sep 19, 14 at 10:33...See MoreAnyone use Algoplus fertilizer for seedlings?
Comments (5)indoors.. right??? i would say proper light intensity is more important than fert ... and im pretty sure.. you have that covered.. right??? after that ... i dont go in for much snake oil ... 6-6-6.. 6 cubed.. is 6 cubed.. is 6 cubed ... cheapest is best ... imo ... the numbers dont lie... nothing else matters .... price doesnt impress me ... when i did seedlings ... i had bleached out gallon milk jugs.. with just enough blue kmart fert in the water that it barely turned the water blue .. and used it for every watering ... it was.. and still is.. the 5 pound plastic jug my dad bought in the 1970s .... lol .... wonder if the price tag is still on it ... [it was less than a 1.4 teaspoon per gal ...] ken...See MoreFertilizer for seedlings
Comments (8)It's not a matter of a "favorite" brand :-) Fertilizer is fertilizer and they all work the same.....the plants don't care what name is on the bottle!! Having said that, while they may all work the same, not all fertilizers are the same so that is where the distinctions should be made. Most plants absorb nutrients in a pretty uniform ratio of 3 parts nitrogen to one part phosphorus to two parts potassium regardless of what stage of growth they may be in. So looking for a fertilizer that offers NPK in that ratio (3-1-2) is optimum. Both the Miracle Gro and the Dyna Gro offer that ratio. And they both offer a pretty full range of micronutrients as well although I am not sure how critical they are for the seedling stage. But to be perfectly honest, any liquid or water soluble fertilizer would work and I doubt you could tell a difference. For seedlings in containers, stay away from organics, unless something in a liquid form like fish emulsion or liquid kelp....See Moretonybaloney
