Grafted a seedling mango to an established tree?

I am curious as to what would be the effect of grafting seedling scionwood to an adult mango tree. I am thinking of trying it on one of mine. I have a good sized gold nugget mango that I received by mistake from the nursery when trying to get a gold nugget jakfruit. I am not really interested in keeping it a Gold nugget and I really want a champaign mango tree but they seem to be impossible to find. Would grafting a 1 year old seedling champaign to the Gold nugget and removing all gold nugget branches greatly increase the growth of the seedling? I am thinking with the huge root system of the Gold nugget the small Champaign graft would explode with growth. Any thoughts?

I don't think this is a good idea. Most mangos grown from seed are unlikely to produce true to type. It may also take many many years before it does produce and the fruit may be horrible. Then again...you may also come up with a new variety. I would keep searching for someone with this variety and beg for some cuttings. You may also check with TREC there in Florida???

I know most mangoes do not grow true to type, but the Champaign is polyembryotic.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. My winter-protection of the seedling trees isn't always perfect, and there is quite often freeze damage on the ends of the branches that are close to the tarps and frost blankets encircling the cages. This system works well for my grafted mangos, because branch length is relatively short, and they can bloom because the branch tips aren't so close to the cage. But on seedling mangos, as you probably know, branches need to be...I don't know...at least six feet in length or more before they bloom. That just isn't possible for me to protect them at this size. Hence, my question about the self-grafting. If you take a branch tip, and move it to the trunk -- I thought that was part of the principle involved in getting a dwarfed tree, and also to get it to fruit sooner? With so much pruning and die-back, my three trees are essentially topped. Main trunks are perhaps three feet tall, and the branches radiate outwards. I know picturing this is difficult for those who have never had to winter-protect and heat a tropical tree! -Bruce

When your mango seed sends up two or more plants if one is signifiantly larger than the other(s) it probably will be s new variety; the others should be mirror images of the mother tree (subject to minor changes). One of my Kent seeds produced two plants. I clef-grafted the slightly smaller plant and the graft 'took' but died while we were on a trip last month. Four new plants are visible around the base of the original seedling and I can see some green leaflets beginning to indicate a fifth new plsnt. All will be Kents, with no more than minor variations. I grafted an Alfonso mango on a Manila mango three years ago and it lived until this year. My clef graft interface was defective as I had bought a new mango grafting tool and the cutting surface was not centered properly. The junction did not heal well. Do not cut scion wood until the new emerging growth has begun growing (possibly a 1/32nd of an inch long). I strongly recommend using parafilm to wrap your scion wood and rootstock to reduce loss of moisture. Clean your tools with ~91% alcohol between cuts. I have grafted scion wood to branches only 1/16th of an inch in diameter on stone fruit but they are very difficult to handle. I recommend using ~3/16ths inch or larger scion wood. Provide shade for a few days so the junction will be a little cooler. Search on the Internet using 'Google', or other browser, with "mango grafting" as your topic. Read several different directions. Develop skills on other plants before you use your mango scion wood unless you have a ready source for more. Apples are a good fruit on which to learn. Most grafts do well if you are careful, keep your tools clean and do not touch the exposed cambium and other materials with your fingers (oil from the hands rates very highly in killing or damaging grafts.).

jsvand, Jay is right. Even though its from a polyembryonic seed, the tree that grew from that seed might not be the asexual plant but instead it could be the embryo that was formed through sexual reproduction. It could be that all the asexual embyros did not survive and only the only that was zygotic survived.

I am actually pretty sure this seedling is a clone. There were 4 sprouts from this seed. I separated it into 4 plants. 3 were from small embryos, and one was the main embryo. I kept them all to grow so I would be assured of getting a few that grew true. This is one of the small embryo seedlings. I was kind of wondering if it actually matters if it was the zygotic embryo. I am figuring the farm that produced the Champagne mango grows exclusively that variety so wouldn't that mean that even if it was the zygotic embryo it would still be the same or extremely close to the parent tree?

Since it was from one of the smaller embyros that should mean it will be a true champagne mango. Even though its from a grove of only Champagne mangos the zygotic embryo still has a large chance of being something different. So you have not any luck finding one of these trees?

No, still no luck. There HAS to be some nursery somewhere that sells these things but I sure can't find hem. They are also called Ataulfo mangoes and they are supposed to be very similar to Manila's, but I can't even seem to find a Manila at a nursery that will ship. I know Manila's are very common out west. I think even Home depot carries them, but they don't seem to be grown in FL. I am wondering if they may not be able to handle the humidity down here or something?

Do you think the seedling would grow faster if I did graft it onto the larger Gold Nugget? It seems like the smaller embryos grow quite a bit slower than the main seedling.
