container size - math question

I am very math challenged tonight - I want to know how to figure if a container is 10 gallons.

I've read you only need 5 gal to grow a tomato plant but I'd rather double that - what diameter/height pot will be 10 gallon sized?

Depends on the shape of course but the 10 gallon round plant pots I use measure 15" tall and 16" in diameter. By comparison the 7 gallon ones are 12" tall and 13 3/4 in. in diameter.

Figure out the cubic inches and convert to gallons using this:

Thanks for the reply Al. I wasn't sure if the yearly potting up process (and root pruning) actually helped the growing process or if it was better to plant a small seedling in a large container and let it remain undisturbed in that same container for a few years. Sounds like the best plan is to pot up my small trees into larger containers next March/April and leave them in those same containers and gritty soil for several seasons. The only thing I'd probably have to do each season is scratch some gypsum into the gritty mix. The Turface and granite won't collapse for many years and the pine/fir bark should last for 2 or 3 seasons. Thanks again. Dave

Try determining the radius of a circle which would enclose your plants roots, then make a cylinder one inch high from this. Perhaps you have a container laying around with a bottom close to the radius of your plants root system, and at least one inch high that will hold water? Then use your two litre, dump into the container until it reaches at least one inch in depth! Now this would assume even absorption of water throughout the ground, so you will either need to move the bottle between fills, or fill more often... Just an idea, maybe someone else has a better one?

You asked about pollinating a vinicolor. I did not quite understand what you are asking. If the question concerns the carrier of pollen, then the answer lies in the specific nature of the structure of the flower: it is adapted to pollination by insects and also a bird of hummingbirds. If the question concerns pollen, then the answer is this: Louisian irises are fully capable of self-pollination, even with their own pollen. Another property of the Louisians is the rapid growth of the rhizome, so you have a problem with the container. At me they grow in soil and not in the container. This is made possible by the absence of drought and the properties of our soils. In your case, there are two options. The first - to transplant into an even larger container, the second - to transplant with the removal of the old part of the rhizome. Here are a photo of a couple of my Louisiana irises:

I like short squat trees. They are so much easier to provide light. My bucket lights are only good for getting a 2-4 year jump on freshly grafted or seed grown trees over the 1st winter. They work very poorly if I try to use them on the save trees a second winter. I have designed bucket lights for 2nd to 4th year winters but have not fabricated any. I want all my citrus trees outside and under glass in the winter. My sweet potatoes grow in 30 gallon containers while my peppers grow in 5 gallon buckets. My heirloom tomatoes come up where ever any of my tomatoes drop and rot. One thing I have noticed is that everyone of us seems to break a citrus necessity rule that no one else can and get away with it with beautiful trees. Remember to fit the plant to the pot as well. A 5-10 gallon pot will grow a dwarf or small cultivar (2-4 ft max)fairly well, but will be a bit tight for a standard-large type of plant.

Well I hope I didnt goof, I just planted my toms in 5 gal plastic buckets. I did last year and had fair luck with them, but I also learned a lot about it and this year I am using a self watering bucket that I made and hope I have better luck than last year. I used the buckets last winter for collards, turnips, and smooth leaf mustard and had top luck with all.
