Anyone know of a source for an 'Oliver' Loquat

I am trying to actually plant a few plants that can survive in my area with me having to do a ridiculous amount of protection. I have a large seedling tree that looks to be a mule at this point so I want to try a grafted one. I have read that the Oliver was a good type but I am open to any other suggestions.

I've tasted about 6 different loquat varieties and if I remember correctly 'oliver' was my favourite. They were all good though. I remember gold (golden?) nugget being a large good tasting fruit also. I know Excalibur usually has Oliver in 3 gallon. They're usually fruiting in a 3 gallon also. I'm sure there's a place closer to you with loquats though.

I have tatsed quite a few.....but never tasted Oliver. Of the ones I have tasted, Christmas and Bradenton were the best. I planted both out in my yard. They are just beginning to set fruit now for the first time. They were planted two years ago

In Google type in a variety name such as "Big Jim" and "Loquat" and you will see several nurseries that ship and many that don't. Unfortunately the mail-order nurseries I noted were fairly expensive or "sketchy" (I'm still not sure about ebay nurseries). The old South Seas Nursery was a normal (small but quality plant) on-line nursery when I got mine. Maybe one of the regular nurseries is close enough to you. I have looked for grafted loquats recently and found no source that is similar to that for so many other fruit trees: grafted (or rooted), quality, decent selection of named varieties, and small enough to be at least reasonably priced.

Hey Nelson, Last summer I asked Joseph about the two or three that he has setting around, but he said he didn't want to sell any of them. Please let me know if you see any around anywhere. Alicia & I stopped in at Hazel's a few times last year, but never could seem to catch you there. But I'm sure we'll cross paths again, sooner or later. Hope you're doing well, too. john

Hello all, I went on this web site requesting help fo getting loquat seeds and somebody was kind enough to send me some. I am very greatful as I now have many small trees growing from the seeds I received. I wanted to repay the person but a virus erased all my e-mail addresses. Jun, You might have better luck with the taste of your 2 inch loquats by leaving them until they start to turn almost light orange. The sourness can turn to sweetness at that point. Loquat is one of those trees that grow wild in Bermuda (along with surinam cherry, pawpaws, peach and to some extent avacado and almond). Interestingly, we had hurricane Igor just pass yesterday, most fair very well in strong winds (peach and pawpaw not so much but both seem to comeback). With their propensity to grow wild so well, this vouches for their ease of care (I.e. none).

I am probably heading down to Excalibur this spring/summer so I'll probably just pick one up there if I can't find one locally.

I forgot about Bradenton. I really liked that one too. Fruit wasn't that big but excellent flavour. Seemed like a good producer too. John you should go to Excalibur when the loquats are fruiting so you can taste em all.

I am planning to head down south during lychee season. I am going to load up on lychees and mangoes this year. Not sure if the seasons are around the same time?

Jsvand, do you know if the Indian jujube will survive in Ocala? I know the Chinese jujube will but I haven't heard of anyone having the other one so far north. Willing to try? I can send you a bunch of seeds and if they survive the cold I can send you lots of budwood.

Grafted oliver loquat trees are available from Jene's Tropicals in St Petersburg, FL. They are $35, I'm ordering one today.
