Where can i find Purple Castor Seeds?

I'd love to have some of these. I have some of the other colors, but have room set aside for this one too. Anyone know where they can be found? or anyone have extras?

New Secret To Castor Bean's Awesome Oil Revealed

Castor plants, source of one of the world's best industrial oils, are gradually revealing the secrets of how they make this prized substance. Scientists with the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Albany, Calif., are delving into the mostly-mysterious mechanisms.

Castor oil is unique and is valued as a lubricant for heavy machinery, or for making greases, pharmaceuticals, paints and more.

The researchers' probing has revealed, for the first time, the starring role that a gene called RcDGAT may play in directing the castor plant to put the oil's most important component, known as ricinoleate, into it.

Ricinoleate is safe and free of ricin, the castor bean plants' natural toxin. The word "ricin" in the name "ricinoleate" stems from the plant's scientific name, Ricinus communis.

ARS research chemist Thomas A. McKeon did the work at the ARS Western Regional Research Center in Albany along with research chemist Jiann-Tsyh Lin and ARS research associate and molecular biologist Xiaohua He.

The scientists filed a patent application for the gene last year. Right now, the researchers are continuing to slip the newly identified gene into yeasts in laboratory experiments that will determine more about how to harness RcDGAT's oil-making prowess.

The idea of producing castor's superior oil in some other plant--one that's safe and easy to grow in the United States--isn't new. But RcDGAT will likely be more important in performing that biochemical feat than other castor-plant genes.

The United States imports about $50 million worth of castor oil every year, primarily from India and mainly for industrial uses.

Dow Chemical Co. of Midland, Mich., provided some of the funding through a research and development agreement with ARS, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's chief scientific research agency.

Here's the recipe from the Ball Blue Book, it takes hot peppers but you could easily leave those out. It's very similar to the one posted by Sooz: Pickled Garlic Pickling mellows garlicÂs pungent taste, creating a unique bite-sized burst of flavour to accent a variety of dishes. Toss pickled garlic into Italian spaghetti sauce, serve it in sandwiches, use as an antipasto or a garnish for salads. 12 large heads garlic, about 1 3/4 lb (838 g) 2 1/2 cups (625 ml) white vinegar 1 cup (250 ml) dry white wine 1 tbsp (15ml) pickling salt 1 tbsp (15ml) granulated sugar 1 tbsp (15ml) dried oregano 5 dried whole chili peppers Place 5 clean 250 or 236 ml mason jars on a rack in a boiling water canner; cover jars with water and heat water to a simmer (180Â°F/82Â°C). Set screw bands aside; heat SNAP Lids in hot water, NOT boiling (180Â°F/82Â°C). Keep jars and SNAP Lids hot until ready to use. Separate garlic bulbs into cloves. To soften and loosen skins, blanch garlic cloves in rapidly boiling water 30 seconds; immediately immerse in cold water, drain and peel cloves. In a large stainless steel saucepan, combine vinegar, wine, pickling salt, sugar, and oregano. Bring to a boil; boil gently 1 minute; remove from heat. Add peeled garlic cloves to hot vinegar mixture. Stir constantly 1 minute. Pack garlic and 1 dried whole chili pepper into a hot jar to within 3/4 inch (2 cm) of top rim. Add hot brine to cover garlic to within 1/2 inch (1 cm) of top rim (headspace). Using nonmetallic utensil, remove air bubbles. Wipe jar rim removing any stickiness. Centre SNAP Lid on jar; apply screw band securely & firmly until resistance is met Âfingertip tight. Do not overtighten. Place jar in canner; repeat for remaining garlic, chili and hot liquid. Cover canner; bring water to a boil. At altitudes up to 1000 ft (305 m), process Âboil filled jars Â 10 minutes.* When processing time is complete, turn heat off and remove canner lid. When boil subsides - bubbles no longer rise to surface (3 to 5 minutes) - remove jars without tilting. Cool jars upright, undisturbed 24 hours. DO NOT RETIGHTEN screw bands. After cooling, check jar seals. Sealed lids curve downward and do not move when pressed. Remove screw bands; wipe and dry bands and jars. Store screw bands separately or replace loosely on jars, as desired. Label and store jars in a cool, dark place. Makes about 5 x 250 or 236 ml jars. Annie

That is just because I am an antique Dave. The 50's were my teenage years on the farm. Folks who preferred white corn had no hybrid choice until Silver Queen was introduced in 1960. White corn dominated the Sweet corn market until the introduction of Burpee's Golden Bantam in the early 20's. Yellows took off as there many efforts to improve on the original including some hybrids introduced in the 30's. The old op's ( 19th century varieties) were popular until Silver Queen started a new era. They are antique old commercial varieties Stowell's Evergreen, Country Gentleman/Shoepeg, Black Mexican ( my mother's favorite), Howling Mob. Robson Farms introduced a long line of Seneca series sweet corn starting in the 30's and they were good but all yellows

Yeah, but if the USDA was really on the ball they'd send us all some seeds of purple-leaved castor beans.

Many seed houses offer bronze or purple-leaved varieties. Johnny's or J.L. Hudson would be worth checking out.
