garden clubs &/or community garden in Bristol/JC area?

Does anyone know of any garden clubs in the Bristol/Johnson City area? I'm new to the area, and would like to meet other gardening friends. Also, are there any public/community garden spaces in this area? I grew up a Midwest country girl that loves to garden & wants to get into canning, but living in a small mobile home park doesn't allow for that.

Any help/information would be much appreciated!

I have no first-hand knowledge of most of these groups, but here's what I find online:

Garden Thyme Herb Society - no official contact info online.
If you're interested, contact GardenWeb member evasage for more email. You should be able to email her through her GardenWeb member page. Eva's super nice and might also be able to tell you about other local groups.

Ken-Ten Iris Association (Dresden, TN / Earnie Royal, president / 270-489-2819) - local American Iris Society group
I can hardly believe that the Tri-Cities doesn't have an AIS club in that area, but it appears that this one is the closest. If you are into iris, you might consider starting a club in the Tri-Cities area. I bet there'd be plenty of interest.

Mid-Appalachian Bonsai Kai (Kingsport / Anita Bausman at 423-239-7602) - local American Bonsai Society group

Tri-Cities Daylily Society (Kingsport, TN / Dennis Hall, president at 423-288-7040) - local American Hemerocallis Society group

Shady Oaks Garden Club (Johnson City, TN / Cindy Hintz at 423-282-9106)

I didn't see any local groups associated with these groups, but you might consider starting one:

African Violet Society of America
American Daffodil Society
American Hosta Society
American Rose Society
Cactus and Succulent Society of America
wildflower groups

There are also other groups that are somewhat associated with plants and gardening, like:

Bays Mountain Park Association
Bristol Bird Club
Friends of Roan Mountain

And, of course, you are cordially invited to attend the East Tennessee Plant Swaps. Look for info in this GardenWeb Forum closer to swap time (usually one in spring and one in fall).

This group looks like it is fairly close to you. You might want to check them out. It's a new group that was formed in September.

contact the Extension Service in your county, sometimes listed as the (your county) County Cooperative Extension Service. They can tell you when and where the classes are being held. In our area, most of the classes are taught by University of Illinois specialists in the fields of their specialty that are outlined in the books. Our classes met one day a week for about 11 weeks. When you have completed the course, you will be expected to volunteer in some way, and remain active as a MG. Jan -- I just dropped in to see what's going on here. Hope I've been some help.

I found this information about community gardens on the Green Spring Gardens web site (It appears that the Fairfax County official you spoke with was ill-informed): "Fairfax County has community garden plots in nine locations. Citizens may rent a 20' x 30' garden plot for the calendar year. There is a waiting list for most locations. Renting a Plot * The rental period is from January 1, 2004 through December 31, 2004. [They didn't update this sentence] Annual fees will not be pro-rated or refunded and checks should be made payable to the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA). * Plots are rented on a first-come first-served basis in the condition they were left by the previous renter. If there are no plots available at your preferred location, you will be placed on a waiting list. If a plot becomes available, Park Authority staff will notify you by phone. If you decline the plot, or do not respond within 7 days the plot will be offered to the next person on the waiting list." As of 4/20/2005, the following plots had more vacancies than people on the wait list: Bo White @ Pine Ridge 6 vacancies, 0 wait list Franconia, Alexandria 7 0 Lewinsville, McLean 8 0 Nottoway, Vienna 4 2 The Garden Plot Administrator may be reached at 703-642-0128, M-F 9-4. abbiejan, winter sowing is OUTDOORS, not indoors. (I originally thought the same thing) We plant seeds in containers in the winter and put them in the backyard for spring sprouting. I have 20 containers full of sprouts in my backyard right now. I am not into indoor gardening either - no space. lynnichols, sounds like winter sowing might be just right for you. We have a ton of Ohio/Columbus gardeners on there and we are all a friendly group. I have a thread over there right now with a roll call of Ohio (BUCKEYE!!!!!) gardeners.

The largest club in the area is the South Applachian Plant Society (SAPS) Their website listing meetings etc is SAPS.US

Additionally, check with the extension agent (Chris Ramsey) located in Blountville.

Thank you, everyone, for the wonderful responses! I'm sorry I didn't respond earlier, but we've had some nasty bouts of flu, bronchitis, and other assorted illness. Looking forward to puting winter behind us, and being able to open doors/windows and freshen the air again!
