purple Eucomis - leaves growing way too early

Bogart

My regular, green Pineapple Lily stays dormant without watering in my dark cool basement until I bring the pot up in May; the purple leaved variety starts sending up leaves in December/January - way too early to bring up as I have no indoor space suitable for it. The shoots are now about eight inches high and, of course, pure white as they have had no light. In years past I have introduced them to light in April/May in an enclosed unheated porch and started watering and the white leaves then purple up.

Is there a way to delay the leaves until I'm ready, instead of the plant thinking it's perhaps still in South Africa?
