Updated picture of large indoor ensete bananas
Comments (37)Kevin, thanks for the offer but I don't really have anything to haul it in. I did call Alpine gardens and they told me they were not going to have the red one but they did say they would have a lime green one and a green one with red splotches on it. It was a kid I was talking to so I am not sure if it is the Abyssinian Banana or maybe I different type. I plan on going up there sometime in April to see what they have. I would love some more of your cannas if you can spare a few. Thanks Linda...See MoreWhat's my problem with basjoos?!
Comments (13)I think the problem is that you are trying to treat a basjoo like any other variety of banana. What make basjoo great is that it can survive, and even thrive, in cold climates. Because it is so well adapted to cold weather, it will not go dormant at temps of 60-65 F. Therefore, keeping a basjoo at temps where it cannot go dormant, and without sufficient lighting, will lead to its demise. I overwinter basjoo pups under HID lights in my cool basement at 60F and they thrive. A 1 ft. pup in November is over 4 ft. tall by April. My suggestions would be one of the following: 1) find a colder location 2) keep them growing by providing adequate lighting 3) overwinter them outside in the ground Regards, Rokal...See MoreMusa Basjoo dying
Comments (16)If there's still any life, it sounds like you may need to remove it from that pot to a very large pot (we have several in 21" (or larger? can't remember now) pots. We just got cheap pots for around $10 each, if memory serves. But the soil IS important. Especially where you are with all the rain and cooler temps. First off, I'd change all the soil, because it sounds like it may not be healthy for the plant. I use a homemade mix of top soil, sand, vermiculite and compost. I do find that while these plants love water, they do like well draining soil. They seem to pout if left wet. As for the white stuff, that sounds like some tiny insect infestation. You should be able to clear that up with some soapy water sprayed on everything..... wipe the leaves off then spray again. We just use a bit of dish soap in a spary bottle, filled with filtered water (don't like using chlorinated water on the plants). I would take it outside though, if it's inside now. It does need the outdoor elements to take off. Don't be surprised if it grows slowly in the temps you are having there right now. Ours didn't take off in a growth spurt until we hit mid 20's. The did grow when the temps were 10C ish, but slowly. Hope that helps....See MoreHelp with Banana (Musa Ensete, Enstete Ventricosum)
Comments (8)I agree that soaking them can help; I've had decent luck (never 100% germination, though) planting them in small pots which are then enclosed in a ziplock bag to maintain moisture. Bottom heat helps, too - placing the bag on top of a refrigerator or setting it up on the end of a fluorescent aquarium strip light (being careful not to cover the vents on the fixture) can provide a little extra warmth to kick the seed into growth. BTW - in a testament to global warming, I discovered the other day that one of the Ensete ventricosum plants I had left in the ground all winter (it was too big to bring in, so I'd started a new one for this year) survived the winter and is growing again, having received no mulch or protection of any kind. I'm used to hardiness in Musa basjoo, M. velutina, and Musella lasiocarpa, but this was kind of a cool surprise - of course, it also messes up the plans I had to replant that space with something different this year!...See Morecrispy_z7
