Since, there seem be so many tomato growing list threads and help me choice my list threads. Why not just create one thread

do both and if it reaches the post thread limit. Then why not start another thread called " the post your tomato growing list, thread 2,3,etc..

Pam, "My" recipe is just my adaptation of Al's 5-1-1 mix from the Container Forum. I've tried to tailor it to the kind of conditions I have here, as well as to my wish to largely avoid peat as much as possible. I even vary what I put in it and in what proportions depending on whether I'm expecting a year that is wet, dry or average. For example, if we were expecting an El Nino spring with heavy rainfall, I'd mix it so it drains better but if I was expecting a drier year, I'd add coir to help it hold moisture. When it is very hot and dry here, even 20-gallon and larger containers often need to be watered twice or three times daily in hot weather so my container plants suffer in a dry year if the mix drains too quickly. As far as the ProMix, that's a lot of peat. If I was going to grow regular plants in it, I'd add pine bark fines for sure. If I was growing acid-lovers like blueberries or azaleas, I'd still add pine fines, but less of them. I can only dream of growing anything here that likes acidity because my soil and water both test at about 8.2 to 8.3. I can modity the soil and lower its pH pretty easily but not the water, so I don't grow anything that prefers highly acidic conditions. Peat is so peculiar. When it is wet, it can hold moisture forever, and that's what I don't like about it. And, when peat gets really, really dry it is hard to rewet it. In climates where the weather can swing from dropping several inches of rain in a few hours to virtually no rain at all for weeks or even months, I feel like mixes that have a heavy peat component underperform compared to mixes that have only a moderate amount of peat, or no peat at all. I do agree that pine bark fines improve any mix heavy in peat, and would drastically improved most any mix you can buy. The heavier peat component in starter mixes is necessary for great drainage, but I don't like that heavier percentage of peat for growing plants beyond the starter stage. Pine bark mulch seems controversial in terms of being used in a veggie garden and I suppose it might not be helpful in every situation and every climate. However, I have used it in years when I couldn't find much hay to use as mulch, and I loved it. It looked wonderful, didn't wash away in heavy downpours and didn't cause me any problems. I read a magazine article once that I think was written by a Texas gardener who was coping with high clay content...as in almost pure clay. Defying the conventional wisdom, he routinely rototilled huge amounts of pine fines and pine mulch (the smaller pieces, not the gigantic ones) into his clay and had huge improvement in a pretty fast time frame. He didn't even state whether he added additional nitrogen to compensate for whatever nitrogen is depeleting as the bark decomposes, but he had enormous soil improvement and was very pleased. His article made me smile because I had started adding some pine mulch to my soil about 3 years before and hadn't noticed any problems and also had huge improvement. For me, the amazing thing is how fast the mulch rototilled into soil breaks down. If I rototill it into soil in January or February, it is largely gone by the following winter. Only a few pieces that were larger than average to begin with will remain a year later. I started adding the pine mulch because so much of my compost was disappearing every year (as the old saying goes, "heat eats compost") and it seemed like I just couldn't add enough to the red clay to fix it. And, I should add, that my red clay is flower pot clay---I believe I could wet it down and work with it and make flower pots---so it takes massive amounts of improvement to make it workable. I wouldn't necessarily add pine bark to fairly normal soil. Having never had fairly normal soil, though, I use lots of pine. This year I added vast amounts of pine fines and humus to one 8' x 4' raised bed that had amended clay that just was not well-amended enough for potatoes. I then immediately planted the potatoes. That was probably in late January or very early February. Those potato plants are growing incredibly well and are about to flower. By contrast, the four long rows of potato plants planted at the west end of the main garden are 1/3 their size and a lot way from flowering. Those were planted in an 8" deep trench and I covered the seed potatoes with a couple of inches of soil, and then continued to add soil as they grew until the trenches were filled in. It really isn't even fair to compare the performance of potatoes in a raised bed to those in grade-level beds, but it is such a striking difference that I cannot believe it. I do think heavy, heavy rain that filled those trenches with water for several days likely had a negative impact on the potatoes and slowed them down. Clearly I need to add a gazillion tons of pine bark fines and compost to the west end of the veggie garden before next season. It is a sandier-clayier loam than the rest of the veggie garden, but no matter how much compost I add to it, it still seems like it isn't as improved as the heavier clay. I usually grow either sweet potatoes or potatoes there, but then find the soil rock-hard at digging time. It probably is the least-improved soil in which I grow veggies because it started out in better shape than the clay, so I kind of ignored it and didn't amend it nearly as much. Now that the rest of the soil is so much better than the west end, I need to work on the west end a lot to bring it up to speed. Susan, I'm sorry you couldn't get the soccer goal. That would have been so perfect. I find so many interesting things at garage sales that can be used in the garden. I got a wooden ladder for $3 once, painted it a medium purple, and now grow purple hyacinth beans on it. It is just the coolest-looking thing when you see only hints of the purple ladder peeking out through all that bean foliage and flowers. Mommyrosalyn, You're welcome and be sure to let us know what you end up with and how they do for you. That's how we all learn from one another. I did forget to list one favorite (not hard to do when you have 100 or 200 favorites) that doesn't get a lot of attention but which does produce very well in our climate, and it is one called Fantastic. There's also an improved version of it called Super Fantastic. I actually prefer Fantastic, which I have to raise from seed myself because I usually don't see it in stores, but I see Super Fantastic in stores pretty often. When you are tomato shopping in chain stores or nursery chain stores watch for tomato plants from Chef Jeff. That particular line carries oodles of heirlooms. However, if you can shop at The Tomatoman's Daughter or at any of the festivals where Duck Creek Farms sells heirloom tomato plants (see link to Duck Creek Farms website below---their schedule of farmer's market and festivals is available there), then any variety they sell likely would please you. Oh fun! Since my spring/early summer harvest is done, here's a full report. Ratings are on taste alone. 10-Black Cherry 10-Gardener's Delight 9-Goose Creek 9-Momotaro 9-Mule Team 9-Sun Gold 8-Heatwave II 8-Isis Candy 8-Neves Azorean Red 7-Stupice (10 cooked) 6-Costoluto Genovese (9 cooked) 6-Heartland 6-Mrs. Maxwell's Big Italian 6-Sweet Baby Girl 3-Hawaiian Tropic 3-Super Sioux I'd rather have store-bought Romas than these last two. On another note, I think I might have found THE most heat tolerant variety: Cold Set. I put out two seedlings just for the heck of it in late May. They are setting fruit like crazy and our days have ranged between 95 and 105, nights 75 - 85 daily for the last two weeks. Amazing. Can't wait to sample when ripe! Two Sheyennes are setting fruit too, but not as many.

I don't post here a lot, but I do on the Canadian forums. I lurk here :-) I don't grow a lot of tomato varieties but I do grow for quality. This year I have one plant, grown form a seed of the original Gordon Graham tomato. He has the world's record largest tomato according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Through good fortune and a friend, I was able to trade for just a few seeds from Gordon Graham's world record tomato. I got one to germinate, so I have one tomato plant that is a direct child of his original! I do grow other tomatoes but I'm really excited about this one! We had a very bad tomato year last year with lots of BER. This year I planted the tomatoes in my good lasagne "wine" garden, dug in lots of old manure, a little lime and one Tums tablet in each hole. The same friend who gave me the seeds above, told me that a Tums will help supply the calcium the tomatoes need to help prevent BER. So I'm trying it. It's easy and cheap, so I figured "Why not?" We'll see how it goes. Needless to say, I baby that plant! In addition to that one, I am also growing our own heritage Portugal beefheart tomatoes (see link to pic below), San Marzano, Manitoba, Ailsa Craig, and Rev Morrow long keeper. I'm starting from seed & most of them are popping up this week. I'm trying for the first time to cram six plants into my teeny garden - repurposing a former flower garden, and putting a cherry in a big container. I've got:

I tried to get some that would come in early, and some that would come in late, as last year, they all kinda came at the same time and it was tomato overload (though I did learn to can! just ate some too! tasted just like summer!).

I'm actually only going to be able to plant about 30 plants this year, though I've got containers ready for the little dwarfs... if they all come in, I'll be giving plenty away to friends as I double up on sowing all of them.

Nearly an even split between returning favorites, new varieties (for me), and previous years' efforts that I thought deserved a second (or third) chance.

There are a few I just have a blindspot for and keep growing (more accurately, trying to grow)...Coustralee fits this category as it is one of the more downright attractive tomato plants I have ever grown...production for me has been below average, but I just can't help myself.

This is my first time to try heirlooms. Only second year to try a garden. Last year had horrible results with plants bought and seeds started. Hungry raccoons! Hopefully will be better this year. All heirlooms are being started by seed.

Early Girl- These things produce like crazy! Not too bad tasting for an early...sure beats the supermarket.

Brandyboy- still my all around favorite. These plants are about as hearty as they come. Some fruits prone to catfacing, but certainly no more than the typical beefsteak. These boys put out some fruit!

Brandywine Sudduth's- First time last year. More vigor and better production than the standard Brandywine. I'm a fan!

Cherokee Purple- good taste, good production, I can think of several others I like better. But, I can make room for this one. ;)

Rutgers- an ol' faithful, probably my least favorite of the group

Jet Star- Very nice tomato. Productive, pleasant taste, not strong tasting, but still very good. Nice variation from the stronger tasting beefsteaks.

Kelloggs Breakfast- Big orange tomatoes. Good slicer. Low production. Good taste. Prone to rot.

Mortgage Lifter- Last year was not as good as years past, but I still love this size and taste of it. Now THIS is a beefsteak!

Big Beef- Good production and vigor. Nice, round, uniformly sized, fairly large size, decent taste.

Red October- A first this year. Had this pack for a couple years now, thought I'd finally give it a go.

I got started a little late, but all the seedlings have finally come up.

San Marzano- Was a great producer last year, I'm going to try drying them this year.

Striped Roman- Pretty and tasty. Was super easy to deseed, too.

Eva's Purple Ball- All around lovely and a good producer even in the heat.

Reif Red Heart- I love hearts!

Gran Assaso- I'm pretty sure I just misspelled that, but it's a great pear.

Cherokee Chocolate- I enjoyed Cherokee Purple so much I thought I'd try this one

Juane Flamme- New this year, so I don't know what it'll be like yet.

Garden Peach- Novelty, think I'll make tomato jam this year.

My list has change a little from when I made a "2008 dream list" but I think these are quite adequate. Some on this list were suggested by Darrel which is a good reason I like ordering from him because I'll tell him a variety I want to try and he'll say "I know one that's even better than that" so this way I get to experience some of the best tomatoes from an expert.

The only tomato missing from my list this year that I really wanted on there is Dr. Lyle but it will be on next years list for sure.

The supersweet 100 is the lone tomato survivor of the original seedlings that I planted. It's been uprooted by the dog and force fed "blue stuff" by the BF and is still going strong. I'm worried that it's going to start hogging the remote next. :)

I am growing: Suddith Brandywine Red, Caspian Pink, Cherokee Purple, Prudens Purple, Tennessee Britches (new this year to me), Aunt Gerties Gold (new to me this year), and Black Cherry. I'm trying Stupice for an early tomato, but I haven't been pleased with it before.

But, why not try and try again. I'm giving it "best soil" this year. If it doesn't work this year, I'll toss the seeds.

My seedlings are about the best I've ever had. I put mirrors behind and before the seedlings, so they got more light than usual. I think that is helping. 5 pairs of leaves and only 6" high. I've been subjecting them to an hour of an oscilating fan most days. The stems seem thicker.

Also, like you I wanted a good early tomato and thought Stupice would be a good choice but Darrel who I ordered my plants from said he had an even better one than that just wish I could remember if it was Kimberly or Galina, lol

In previous years I have coddled my tomato babies and used different contraptions to protect them from inclement weather. I usually have great success. This year, I can barely spare 5min away from my baby girl to sneak into the garden to see how the maters are doing. They aren't doing so great. So, from my original list, I have had to do a few replacements with whatever I could find from the "big box" stores or local plant sales.

1.Great White (need a beefsteak) UPDATE - DEAD
2.Purple Calabash (hoping for taste since I liked purple prince) UPDATE - 1 barely alive (Jbox)
3.Green Sausage (novelty) UPDATE - DEAD
4.Purple Prince (LOVE the taste) UPDATE - DEAD
5.Polish Linguisa (need a paste!) UPDATE - Pretty sure it will be dead when I get home today.
6.Black Cherry (hoping for taste and early) UPDATE - Really DEAD
7.Sungold (last year sucked, give it another chance) UPDATE - One of 4 tomatoes I had in 2 J-Boxes(Josho) that is alive
8.Stupice (early) UPDATE - Not sure actually. Suckers are forming where the original branches were sunburned and windwracked (Jbox)
9.SilveryFirTree (for the foliage) UPDATE - I give it 45% survival chance at this stage
10.Oxheart (need a regular red!) UPDATE - ALIVE! One of 4 in jbox.

I also lost all my Ultimate Giant and Red Oxheart seedlings to Dampening Off, but I still have several seeds saved back, so I will try again next year now that I know what I did wrong (thanks, Darrel!), but at least I did find one Red Oxheart plant at a greenhouse.

I love going through everyone's lists and see which names keep popping up... I already have some more varieties I want to try next year! :^)

Ok, so after my wilty leafed, dead seedling fiasco LOL...here is what made it into the garden from the seedlings that survived ( and I am very happy with getting them hardened off and in the ground even if it is fewer than I would have liked....I consider this a great learning year).

Started from seed at home:

San Marzano 1 out of 6

Cherokee Purple 4 instead of the expected 3

Aunt Ruby's German Green 2 out of the expected 2 and possibly a third..it is still small so I held back on it

Olena Ukrainian 2 out of the 3

Campari F2?- 3 : Was sent the seeds(thank you Rocklandguy) and planted them late by the WS/SS method at the end of April. I had doubts, but they are now looking like they will be big enough in a week or 3 to go into the garden, better late than never ...Wooohooo :)

From the store:

This is our first year EVER to grow all tomatoes from seed; some were "wintersown" thanks to Trudi D's group; and others sown "under the lights". All were first transplanted before April 15th and were consequently exposed to the elements with only burlap sheeting for cover during our early spring snow, hail & wind. NP, of some 12 dozen or more seeds sown, I have sold or given away more than half... **Anyone need starters?** They travel well... :)

A vantage thread... Interesting how some old popular ones are still around this season after SEVEN (7) years. They must have have passed the test of time and the test of TASTES. .

But , as it is always the case the gardeners get a lot of enthusiasm about planning and planting BUT don't like to come back and evaluate how their choices did in the real garden and real life.
