Gardens to visit on Kauai, Hawaii???

I'll be going to Kauai in November, and would like any ideas on gardens to visit there. I understand that there is a National Botanical Garden there, can anyone give me any more information about it, or any other public or private gardens that would be worth seeing?

Oh my goodness, are you in for a treat. I hope this reaches you before you leave. I've vacationed on Kauai for the past 15 years, although I've been gardening only for about 6 of those. There are two NTBG sites on Kauai, one on the south side of the island (Allerton Gardens, in Poipu) and one on the north side (Lawai). Both are well worth a visit. Lawai is representative of more traditional Hawaiian flora; it took a big hit from Iniki but has recovered and reopened.There are self-guided tours. Allerton Gardens only offers guided tours, be sure to book in advance through your hotel or look them up in the phone book. Enjoy, enjoy. I envy you!

Lawai is on the North side of the island, and I loved it. Buy the self guided booklet. I learned a lot about Hawaiian culture and even gave a speech on it!

Thanks for the suggestions leilaniguy and randg. I will be visiting May 17-23, so I will unfortunately miss the special event at the Oahu Urban Garden Center. bboy - I am most interested in Aroids, but I know there are not a lot of Aroids that are native to Hawaii. I will look forward to any type of tropical plants that are viewable. If you have a favorite, I'd like to hear what it is. Thanks!

Hi Hal, In Hawaii you'll see little stands in touristy places and I think the airports too with packaged Hawaiian plants for sale. I think these are probably ok to take out of the state (passed by agriculture dept.), but to get a piece from someone's yard might be a different deal. Your own state might have regulations about bringing in such plant material. Have a wonderful trip.

Aloha! My husband and I just got back from a week in Honolulu and had such fun we're already planning a trip for this October for about 10 days to Kauai and Maui. We've been to Kauai before, but not to Maui. We'd LOVE to find out about PRIVATE gardens we might visit. Any suggestions? They don't have to be big, fancy gardens - we just want to talk to local gardeners, see what's in their backyards. Mahalo for any info you can provide. Also, we'd prefer to rent a small house rather than stay in a hotel (we've done this 3-4 times before and it worked out great). Any suggestions? Susi

Aloha! Kauai is our most favorite place in the world to visit. the whole island is a garden. We did the Allerton Gardens tour, in Poipu, and it's well worth the time and money. EnJoy!

Allerton Gardens. We had a wonderful "kooky" but informed tour guide and the gardens were simply beautiful. This was in April 2001. Enjoy.
