Gardens on Maui and Kauai

Aloha! My husband and I just got back from a week in Honolulu and had such fun we're already planning a trip for this October for about 10 days to Kauai and Maui. We've been to Kauai before, but not to Maui. We'd LOVE to find out about PRIVATE gardens we might visit. Any suggestions? They don't have to be big, fancy gardens - we just want to talk to local gardeners, see what's in their backyards.

Mahalo for any info you can provide.

Also, we'd prefer to rent a small house rather than stay in a hotel (we've done this 3-4 times before and it worked out great). Any suggestions?

Thanks guys for all the info. I need to talk to my sister about visiting in May. Although I haven't been there in awhile, I agree the Dole Plantation is a great place to visit. Hi again, So I have read a lot from this forum and tried to absorb as much as possible...Besides doing to plumeria101 is there a book maybe someone can recommend? I posted another question about my "cigar" I bought from Maui...it was at one of those ABC stores and I am wondering if it is still ok...I see on the stick that there are some white "eyes". What does that mean? I live in Portland/Vancouver area...The weather has been odd here...I had the plummie in a 4-5 inch pot on the window but I am wondering if I should move it somewhere warmer? it has been in the high 30s to mid 60s here...And when should I start fertilizing? I bought some 12-55-6 mix? Thanks again for all the great info!

Karen- Your Jeannie should be more like the red one. My orange one is a seedling and may be a one of a kind. I also highly recommend Calif. Sally as one of the most prolific large pinks. Once established, it will not disappoint. Freak4- you have so many of the flowers I would love to see. Also, you gotta love Twilla- a gem of a lady. Thanks for your info on blooms- looking forward to your summer crop. I am cutting back and trying not to buy but I did get a Makaha Sunn and a Dazzler this year and I have a Mermaid Gem that is struggling to root, but that is all so far (ok 1 dwarf pink,too). Between Jim Little and the Thais there are so many I wish I could find room to have. You have many that I drool over, too. Hope your new digs have room for your collection. Bill

Can anyone recommend gardens in Maui ?

My brother lives on Maui and is in the wholesale nursery trade. He recommends: Kula Botanical Garden 808-878-1715 and Kahanu Garden 808-332-7324. $10 ea to get in. Both fairly large. Don't expect to see loads of plumeria, rather, exceptional collections of tropical and native plants. You'll see plumeria all over the island, by the coast.
