Can I continually save cuttings from a plant till the next year?

I just got an idea...if I have a tomato plant this year that produces well and I would like to grow the same plant next year, is it possible to take a sucker from it, root the sucker, pot it, then grow it indoors all winter till the following spring? Every time the plant got too big to fit under the grow light, I would take another sucker, root it, discard the overgrown plant, and start the process over again with the new sucker, and repeat the whole thing till the following spring. Would the plant survive the winter in these conditions; is it worth a try?
