If I'm not mistaken Ray is doing that exact thing with Purple Haze F1. He should be placing it in his earthtainer very soon for 2009 grow out. So yes why not!!

Some folks do that and there are several threads in the backposts where it's discussed, if you want to do a search at the bottom of the page: I'm too lazy this AM to do it. LOL

But take more that one cutting and be sure they've taken before discarding the plant it came from. And yes, it will take successive cuttings to get the timing right so that you have a seedling at the right age to plant outside.

Most folks I know don't clone plants b/c they usually want to plant different ones each year.

And yes, under grow lights the plants will survive over the winter. But don't expect fruits if you let them get to that stage. Take cuttings earlier than that.

Whether it's cost effective for you to do so depends on how much importance you place on having the same variety, meaning, is it a rare one, or a common one that you could raise from seed at the same time you raise all your other seed grown ones.

Ray has some that he really wants to clone b'c he started out with a hybrid, I think it was Purple Haze.

I will be saving seeds this year as I'm growing only OP varieties, but I want to try the cloning just for fun and see if I can keep it alive till the following year.

Starting from new seed is always the desired route. You start fresh each year - free of possible carry-over disease from the prior year that may occur in saved cuttings. Having said that, I was fortunate to snag a Purple Haze F1 sucker from a friend and have now nursed 3 generations of rootings from the original sucker. I have done this as it is near impossible to find the F1 Purple Haze seed.

It is a real challenge to root successive suckers and the plants get real leggy over the Winter - - but in this one variety, the hassle is worth it to me.

Thanks Raybo - I saw your other thread and commented on it - I look forward to see how your cuttings turn out this year. Like I said, if I try it myself it will just be as an experiment for fun.
