IF, for the next ten years, you were restricted to only six

varieties at no more than four plants each, what would then

be your choices?

This question was written by AlpineJS, but they didn't know how to start a new thread. Posting it for them.

I don't have a good answer to this question because I have not grown a lot of tomatoes.

My first picks for Arizona though this year are...

Cherokee Purple
Sun Gold
Black Cherry

Give me a few years and I may have a few more.

If we were to use ribsyhuggins's standard for asking questions though we might as well shut down the forum.

An early - Glacier, Matina etc.

I don't like cherry tomatoes but many love them.
I make and freeze salsa but I don't need much. Some need lots and lots of tomatoes. 24 plants would bury counters and tables in my house with boxes of tomatoes.

There are lots of threads on favorites; that is what this forum is mostly. Do a search. You will find some varieties listed over and over and someone else will hate them. Pick a few and grow them, you'll like half of them. Next year try some more. It would be boring sticking to the same ones for 10 years. I grow many to try them for fun. It is addictive to read about them and then try to get the seeds.

Krycek1984, I want to address a few points brought up in your post. First, there's really need for more personal attacks. There were enough of those already in this thread. While I sometimes disagree with iforgotitsonevermind, she certainly isn't generally ignorant, and even when she and I see things in almost totally opposite ways, I don't think she tries to be arrogant. Maybe she gets a little over excited, but don't well all. Iforgotitsonevermind's concern was not whether mimosa is currently considered an invasive pest in the area, but whether it had the potential to be in the near future. Your assurance that it "will not become an invasive species unless global warming goes crazy", falls short of convincing me. As I said above, I'm not convinced that it will ever become a problem, but your assertion, that it's not even close, doesn't convince me the other way, either, and seems to be based more on feeling than proof. Your question about who cares if you plant Bradford pears can have many answers including a number of invasive plant groups (which are concerned about their damage to the environment in many areas), neighbors (who worry about the trees falling over the property line onto their car, producing a foul smell, or making the neighborhood ugly when they fall apart at an early age), and those that want to share information they've learned from their mistakes or observations.

What varieties of tomato plants would be easiest to sell?

I just planted another 45 seeds today, 15 each of the varieties I mentioned in my previous post. I also planted another 30 old seeds, but I don't have much hope for them as only a few sprouted so far. I am just about maxed out on area under my lights and heat mat and oven, so I think maybe around 150 seedlings will be it until it gets warm enough to leave all of them outside all day and night. Whether I start a second batch of 150 seedlings will depend on whether I can sell most of what I started already. I am hoping that my seedlings get big enough to sell before the Fullerton Arboretum has its monster tomato and pepper sale. Looking on Craigslist I only see one seller so far selling tomato plants, but the number will most likely increase in March. My tallest seedlings are now about three inches tall, and it has been about four weeks since I planted the first ones. I have been giving them some potassium nitrate dissolved in rainwater, as it says on the Pro-Mix bag to start supplemental feeding as soon as the seedlings get their first set of true leaves as Pro-mix doesn't have any fertilizer in it. I believe someone posted Cal-nitro was a good fertilizer to use, maybe I'll go buy some.

I agree that the problem is that you transplanted too early. Tomatoes are tropical plants. I actually had one seedling that did the same thing this year! It wasn't dying, but it just wouldn't grow. It was given to me by a friend several weeks before I planted outside and it got dry a few times. It is growing now but I don't very much expect it to recover all that well. Tomatoes aren't very resilient in my experience. I have heavy clay soil down here and it is really fertile stuff - I had a tomato plant that nearly ate Dallas a few years ago! (you know, the kind that has you looking for unlocked cars in the parking lot at work so you can unload tomatoes onto unsuspecting coworkers!). I wouldn't use fertilizer myself, but it sounds to me like you may be way over-fertilizing them. The best thing you can do is amend the soil with compost. Even side-dressing with compost or watering with compost tea (compost mixed into a bucket of water and allowed to sit for a couple of days), tomatoes love that.

The 6 that are "must-grow" varieties for us:

Mortgage Lifter - Estlers
Yellow Oxheart
German Red Strawberry
Big Zebra
Dr. Carolyn Pink (Cherry)
Black Cherry

... at least those are the top 6 for now; who knows when we may find another new "must have". We only learned how wonderful the German Red Strawberry is last year and decided that it deserved to be on our Every Year list.

Alpinejs, it was very nice for Kirchren to post your question for you, but it is quite easy to post new messages and you will get more information with separate threads, although I have occasionally hijacked a thread or two, LOL. Go to the main Tomato Forum page, scroll down almost to the bottom where it says "Post a Message to the Forum". It looks just like the "Post a Follow-Up" box. Let us know if you have further difficulties with it(you may have obstacles we are not aware of, disabilities, technical problems, etc). Hope this helps.

24 plants would be rather inadequate when feeding 7, but to take the spirit of the question, ...

It would depend on what turns out to grow well in this climate.

For many years in PA and New England I was content with Early Girl, Better Boy, Jubilee, Yellow Pear, Sweet 100, and either Rutgers or a rotating choice of beefsteak varieties depending on what caught my fancy in a given year.

Here where many of my old favorites haven't done as well as I'd hoped, I can't say until I have found the right options.
