Growing Tomatoes

Help with identifying tomato seedlings

Hello, I planted some tomato seedlings a few weeks ago hoping to get a head start on growing. I planned to plant the cherry tomato plant in pots and the early girl tomato in the ground so knowing what seedlings they are would have been great...but...in all my excitement, I forgot to label the seeds...this is my first season growing these varieties, so I'm not familiar with what the seedlings look like. I can see that one variety has sharper leaves and the other has rounded leaves. Can someone help me identify them?

They are either Early Girl or Cherry Vine Bush variety.

I don't think anyone can safely ID your seedlings! We always have a few people who forget to label their seedlings (and they aren't always newbies!) who plaintively ask the same question!

That said, your seedlings look fine and healthy!

No one can be sure but I would bet on the bottom picture being Early Girl.

Thanks very much for posting these. Quite a few things like the same in the cotyledon stage. After seeing your pics I realize I pulled a few self sown Morning Glory seedlings. I should rig up a harness around my neck to mount my laptop so I can walk around with it to consult before I pull weeds...LOL. I keep "watching" things that turn out to be weeds and prematurely pull reseeds!

Pippi, My plant markers are made from the covers from coffee cans, margarine tubs, cottage cheese tubs, sour cream tubs. Anything that has a plastic cover. I cut them in half, and then each half is cut in half again. I use a black deco paint pen. Those are permanent and never fade. Some of those markers that are in the pics are 6 years old. I save them from year to year and just reuse them if I sow the same seeds again. Not all paint pens are the same. The ones that can be used on clothing do not work well on plastic and don't last, they either fade or rub off. A few others I've tried took a long time to dry on the plastic as well. That's why I stick with and use only Deco paint pens. By the time I'm through writing a label on the plastic, it's dry and ready to use. Oh, I don't cut of the edge of the covers either. I write the name of the seeds on that edge as well on the side of the tag. That way I can look down and read what is in the container as well as on the side Fran

I label my starting containers with my storage bottle number and a name (abbreviated if there is not enough room, the number is the best clue since it is listed in my spread sheet with full name and description.) When I transplant I make a label for each new container. This works great for me. Until yesterday. I found one six pack with a corner cell that does not have a label. Dunno if it fell off (not too likely, they have sticky backs) or I forgot to put it on. I have gray hair and perhaps ADD.... The unlabeled cell has Richardson next to it and Julia Child behind it. I think it is Julia Child since I had 3 of them come up. No wait, that is not a PL, and Julia Child is. Richardson is RL, but only 4 came up and I have 4 labled Richardson? One mystery mater (so far) out of 230+. Not bad. I'd consider just tossing it in the compost heap, but I have some that only had one plant of. Guess who will be sitting down with a spread sheet and her baby maters, checking her list and checking them off to try to track down the missing name? Bets

I planted strawberries, carrots, bell peppers, snap peas, corn, watermelon, and sativa. The last two were added last year but never sprouted.

Plant maybe two more of each. LABEL THESE. Now observe the
new ones as they develop and match them to the older plants, which you may label when you have concluded an identification.

Then, if you decide you have extra plants you can make a friend very happy with a gift!

You might also want to cut back on your watering so they won't be so yellow. ;)

Top picture = the Cherry Vine Bush

Bottom picture = the Early Girl

Suggestion: Give them a mild shot of fertilizer. The cotyledons are played out. Give them something with a high middle number (phosphorus) and a lower first number (nitrogen). A mild dose, nothing full strength. Then hold them under whatever light you've been using because it looks very sufficient, but submit them to cooler temps like 55 - 65*F to keep them stocky and not let them grow to fast and get leggy.
