Growing Tomatoes

Ah it's been a while... time to start choosing seeds

I think I dropped off of here in the middle of last summer. I seem to have trouble keeping up with more than 1 forum at a time. lol

Well I've been deer hunting most of the fall and now the season is closed so I figured it's time to get going with the seeds. I have some staple varieties that I know I will be growing but always try a couple new ones each year.

I'll be going through my inventory of seeds I have saved and then ask for trades... gotta figure out all the varieties I want first and get it all organized so I can divide them up among 66 plants as usual.

I also had the "Post your 2011 tomato pictures" thread going until I dropped off the forum, just curious if anyone kept that going or not? I guess I will start one for 2012 soon as it seemed to be popular.

I was just reading your profile Catman. You sound a lot like my late brother. That is a good thing. He was always in the air if not trying to figure out a better way for planning the garden or growing something new.

first time for me on this forum so I wouldn't have missed you. Glad you posted.

I am in the middle of western Canada in a zone 4ish. I love growing tomatoes although I don't know how good at it I am. Still practicing. I was doing my seed inventory to William Shatner's Weird Or What marathon on New Year's Eve and seem to have misplaced my 125 pkg. tomato seed baggie!!! Oh dear!! I'm sure it will show up somewhere soon so in the meantime I am going to order a few varieties I don't have and have been wanting to try. there is a seed house here that specializes in northern hardy vegie seeds and has a few varieties of tomatoes I want to try. Just curious what your favorite varieties are where you live?

When I find my stash, I will sure trade if you are still interested. :)

Just curious as to what the "staple" varieties are that you grow? I saw that Burpee had an italian ice white cherry tomato in their catalog that i was thinking about trying. Went with sun gold from botanical interests for my cherry tomato this season

Marcia, yes she does like flowers! Last year I taught her not to pull on the flowers, so she says "pat pat" and pats them. She thinks sea holly is hysterical because it's "sharp". The other day my mom found her with her face sideways on the ground and her butt in the air, having a conversation with a caterpillar. I haven't started a garden for her yet but I've been thinking about it.

Susie, Take a look at my list and see what you might want to try. If your going to order from Parks there are a few things I want to try this year that I have not ordered. 1) The Whopper - we discussed 2) Magda squash - Dr. Carolyn Male, Goddess of Tomatoes and all things tomato was discussing other veggies she likes today over on the Tomato forum and brough up this lebanese delight.... 3) Veronica - Heat tolerant cross between broccoli and caulifower that just may actually grow here according to some GW-Floridians. Hello! I am back on the mainland and in my beloved zone 7. I am eagerly awaiting spring and hope to get my hands dirty again and get my garden cleaned up this year. The hardiest plants survived 3 tenants over 4 years (plus one summer of my own neglect while I unpacked) which has left quite a bit of space for new inspiration. At least the kids are old enough now to help! And they like gardening too - My daughter is really into it for the bugs so we managed to start a small butterfly garden for her at the end of last summer. I have a new baby coming in the beginning of April so I don't think I will be doing too many seeds inside this year. I think however I will used an unspent Christmas gift to buy one of those pre-planned shade gardens for one of my long term problem spots. (I think I can get the kids to put it in for me.) Not very creative but I didn't have time to think plants this winter. - besides that it is amazing how much I have forgotten of North American plants. I once was so foolish as to jest at a friend who had moved around and had trouble remembering which plants were perennials vs. annuals. Now here I am with a slightly more "mature" brain struggling to keep them straight after my time in the tropics. I have bantered enough. I am glad to be back and am looking forward to the next swap! TA DAA! simon won TWO first place ribbons. i'm gonna have to take him down a notch, he's getting a little too uppity now. have you ever tried to take a corgi down a notch? it ain't easy, their legs are only 2" long! got home late yesterday, 7 p.m., wanted to do a quick check to see if my bluebird momma had added anything to the nest. she is building with NOTHING but pine needles. i put my finger down inside to see if the cup was complete so i would know when to expect eggs. i have not checked for 3 days other than opening the box and taking a peek. imagine my surprise when i felt AN EGG!!! :O there is hardly any NEST there! so i got my little mirror out. well, there wasn't AN egg...THERE WERE 3 EGGS!!! i rushed around and made a sparrow spooker and got that up and when i came home today, i checked and yep, FOUR EGGS! she was sneaky!! i have to tell you guys, they set gary's headstone at the cemetery on saturday. when i went to see it after they finished, as soon as i got out of my truck and started walking toward gary's grave, i heard a bluebird, looked up and saw a male sitting on the wire that goes almost directly over gary's grave. i was there for almost 30 minutes and he stayed the whole time, flitting around from place to place, never out of my sight and singing the whole time. i took it as a sign from gary that he approved of my design. :)

For tomatoes, my main staples are brandywine sudduth, opalka, black krim, sungold f1, and indian stripe or cherokee purple.

I have some staple varieties that I know I will be growing but always try a couple new ones...Bought some tom seeds from Diane's Seeds this year for the first time. So no clue as to their viability and true-to-type parameters (I would think that C Male could provide sound insight in those regards). Anyhow, Diane has a good selection and seeds as well as seeds of some unusual tom cults. Also, the blurbs applied to the tomatoes' descriptions mercifully do not exude a hyperbolic measure of each varieties' virtues, as the cats of some do.
