help! my green bean plants are dieing!

i can't seem to understand how to water these bean plants.. I have a 4X4 raised bed garden and had three healthy green bean plants and was giving them a nice soak in the am.

I live in Phoenix and it was a very hot summer. It has just recently started cooling off at night and in the morning. One of the plants has died. The leaves just shriveled up and died and the second looks to be doing the same. I don't know if i am overwatering or underwatering.

I skipped waterning them today to see what happens. Will check them in the morning. What do you think?

I don't know what the bean season is in your area, but in my area the plant would have already been dead. I am assuming these are bush beans and not pole beans? Even my pole beans have finished for the year and are in decline. Just pulled them all up yesterday.

I would suspect some sort of bacteria fungus or virus. I think pythium causes sudden wilt in beans. Check with the guys over on the vegi forum, they know way more. Usually when a plant suddenly keals over it is some sort of disease. My beans are just setting flowers here in Tx for a fall crop. So unless your nearing freezing temps I don't think your season is over.

The date on the package doesn't take into account your soil, weather conditions, or rainfall. You are a better judge of when to pick. We have Contenders, too (and by the way, congratulations on choosing one of the best bush beans!). When the green beans are as big around as a pencil or slightly smaller, pick. The smaller beans are more tender and flavorful. You are in for a taste treat! You didn't ask, but be sure to pick only when the plants are dry (not dewy or rained on) and pick about every other day--beans come on fast!

they are planted in rows abt 15" apart and the plants within a row are planted abt 15" apart..........that's what my old seed packet instructed me to do - no idea why, that's not the norm. The new one says 3" apart, so I intend to plant 2 seeds in between each of the curent plants. Maybe the spacing is what caused that last year, if it is indeed sunburn. Whatever it is, it stunted all of them last year. Some of the plants have holes in them or the bottom half of the leaves chewed off, must be bugs. I never see anything on them though, perhaps it is happening at night? a fungal or rot issue... damping off, which is really just what gardeners say when seedlings die for some reason or another. it might be too early for beans, or you might just need to keep planting beans until you have enough healthy plants. (i have to do this often with beans.) one thing to try is different varieties--maccaslan and rattlesnake are two that have done well for me and have been bred for southern growing. they have good disease resistance and don't normally die off on me. a trick: take a stryo cup, rip off the lower 1/3. half-bury it in the soil. fill it with peat moss. plant the seed in the cup. that's how i end up growing some things in late summer that, like beans, require direct sowing.

Since I see brown frass in the little tunnels and relatively early in the season, the tiny larvae may still be present, feeding in the bean tissue between the upper and lower surfaces of the leaf. You can squish them so that they can't grow up to be the very small adult fly, moth, or beetle, depending upon the species. Or, you can remove the leaf and throw it away (in the garbage) . If you end up with a terrible infestation, we can go to "plan B". I suggest that you take an affected leaf and hold it up to the light to learn a bit more about leaf miners. You can also use Google to do a tiny bit of research on leaf miners in general or leaf miners on beans.

try asking in the vegetable forum where you may find people who know what may be effecting you beans.

Hi
I am in Palm Springs, California and I just picked and ate the first Kentucky Wonder pole beans of the season. Also I was able to pick and eat the first okra. Got one new cucumber on the one vine that survived the summer.

8 great tomato plants are 12 foot high they are flowering now but no setting. the Sweet 100 tomatos are going great they are green now.

Two egg plants survived the summer also. These plant will give us more than we can eat. They are in bloom now but as yet not fruit.

Basil is great. One plant. I just got to keep picking it and keeping it from going to seed.

I have one potato plant also.

All these are planted in Two 8X4 raised beds. The supersweet 100 cherry tomatos are in one 4X4 raised bed.

Also in the yard is one tangeringe grafted onto sour orange. A Lemon, Mexican Lime, valencia orange and grapfruit. There is a dwarf plumb tree as well.
I think I lost to peach trees and one apple tree.

I almost forgot I planted charlston grey watermellons as ground cover. They taste great.

Any suggestion on what to plant and at what time would be great.
