Even after rain / water - upper leaves still wilting -

can I just prune these brances off ? throw away - and hope for new growth ? Some of the bottom leaves are turning yellow - the wilt on top is whats bothering me - its only on the commercial yellow pear (that i bought ) that i grew from seed - the other yellow pear plants that i grew from seed i saved from last year are completely fine -

Seems to me it could be a couple of things, one some tomatoes just tend to wilt in the middle of the day, see if it is wilting when it is cooler out, 2 you had a late frost that got the plant tips, or 3 you are over watering.
You could prune them and they would grow again or just leave them a little longer and see if they recover after you check the three things above.

Is perhaps your ground waterlogged from all the rain we've received lately? I ask b'c with waterlogged soils the plants can't get oxygen or nutrients and so wilt and then the leaves turn yellow.

Also, Yellow Pear is quite susceptible to Early BLight ( A. solani) but you haven't described any lesions on the leaves that go a long with that, and EB doesn't show wilting anyway, as a symptom.

But if we're talking just this yellow Pear and the others of the same variety are fine right now then perhaps one might start thinking about a seedborne disease.

Are all the Yellow Pears being grown in the exact same area and receiving the exact same treatment?

Everyone is saying "MULCH"! >> I have added several inches of mulch around the tomatoes and cucumbers >> I used a composted soil amendment as mulch Mulch is insulation. Like fiberglass insulation (which would work, in its own weird way!) the thicker the better. Also it's best dry on top, damp on the bottom where it touches that non-insulating soil amendment, and airy in the middle. Several inches isn't a lot if you are having problems that could be linked to heat and humidity. Tomato roots are impressive water sucker-uppers. IF they're healthy. Water and healthy roots do not add up to heat wilt, even without shade cloth. I have conditions similar to yours: heat, sun and wind. What the tomatoes DO have is gangster roots, and they haven't the slightest tendency to wilt. YET. Knock on wood. I just jinxed it, didn't I? Are you absolutely SURE that the watering goes down to an appreciable depth? Water it with a dribble for hours! Since there's no such thing as water wilt on a grown tomato that's not going to die, what do you have to lose? Then add another four inches of straw on the previous four.

Anyone saving water for after the rain?

We installed a swimming pool this summer and just covered it up last weekend before the rains. The cover is watertight. Guess what? It's a great rain catcher! We used the submersible pool pump connected to a hose to fill up our rain barrel! We are still pumping water but it is now going directly into the gardens as we don't have another way to store it. I'm taking advantage of this to really soak the willows and other water-loving plants. I never would have thought about it. I think we can easily fill up 5-6 rain barrels(60 gallons each) over the winter. We just need to go buy more rain barrels. We also bought a front-load washer (which I mentioned in another post) that saves us 20+ gallons per load. Also, we are still catching shower water for the potted plants. You are right. :) I watered it in the evening, and by late night, it was looking good again. It gets sun all day long, but is slightly filtered by a tree above after a certain hour, and I guess those leaves plus the leaves on the plant blocked it from the rain. I am cautious about BER and overwatering, bc of so many photos of it online. So far, so good. Phew.

Sey, The plants have drainage holes in their pots. They are allowed to dry between watering. The soil is general potting soil that is used by greenhouses (I was able to buy in bulk). Like I said earlier, it was within hours after watering with the water from the RB. I think that the herbicide is what is causing this. I have been using the recovery stuff when I do water. So far some have come back somewhat and some look like they will not make it. It is such a bummer because when you start them from seed, you invest so much time in them. Oh well, now I know to protect my RBs! Harry, I have lost many bushes and plants on the part of my yard that borders with my directly back yard neighbor. He gets his yard sprayed A LOT. It is very frustrating. I would say a wind block may help, but you would have to know when they are spraying. We have large yards and my gardens were in the back prior to this guy building his house. Are all the Yellow Pears being grown in the exact same area and receiving the exact same treatment?

they are all in a row in the back of my garden Carolyn; the ones on the left are ok - the ones on the right ? not so good - i have spotted new growth on one of the ones i "trimmed" - but the other is rapidly declining - i was wondering if i should keep pruning the wilted leaves ? or just pull them ~ Tom
