Was just reading an older article from the Journal of the Japanese Society for Horticultural Science (Saito, Hatayama and Ito, 1963) English summary on factors effecting growth and fruiting of tomato: light.

Photoperiods longer than 16 hours on seedlings retarded growth and flower and reduced flower numbers later on. = dont leave the lights on your seedlings too long.

Another article, (Mancellini, 1968) talking about germination, mentioned that cool white flourescent lamps delayed germination and incadescents inhibited germination. = leave your seeds in dark until they come up then move them into light to increase/promote germination.

Some cultivars' germinations are completely inhbited by light exposure.

Be good to have this over on the Growing Under Lights forum too as everytime one of us posts the recommendation for 16 on and 8 off, there some there who consistently argue that 24/7 lights on from day 1 is the only way to go. ;)

I'm currently doing 12 hrs on and 12 hrs off with excellent results. I have observed plants that were under 24/7 light to have significant problems with root expansion and overall growth.

Which concerns are "most concerning"? Let's back up a minute and discuss the role of domes in growing seedlings indoors. First, most experienced growers don't use them at all so domes sure aren't required for any reason. Rather they are a "crutch", a tool developed for newbies and inexperienced growers to make it easier for them to maintain the soil moisture levels until the seeds germinate. Once germination happens in the tray, the standard recommendation is to remove them and leave them off. This is because the prevent adequate air circulation, trap stagnant air inside, and don't allow for proper moisture evaporation. That is the perfect recipe for damp-off, a fungus disease that attacks and kills seedlings. This is all discussed in much more detail in the FAQS on the Growing from Seed forum here. But manufacturers market them to make more money and mislead the public by showing pictures of plants growing under them. They make it appear they are required when they aren't and when the potential harm from putting them on plants indoors far outweighs any possible benefits. Some even go so far as to call them "mini-greenhouses" when there is no comparison as any GH grower can tell you. So, that said, there is no recommended role for dome covers when growing seedlings indoors once germination has happened and the risks associated with using them are several. In addition to the damp-off, there is heat buildup which can kill the plants and trapped moisture which can lead to root rot and attracts insects such as fungus gnats and spider mites, stagnant air when fresh air is required, and reduced light exposure. Your problems are not going to be solved by leaving a dome on your plants. You have left them under a dome since February and all that has done is stunt their growth and caused roots to rot. Plus you are using incandescent lights which produce lots of heat but very little light that is useable by the plants no matter how long you leave them on. Only cool white fluorescent bulbs are used in growing. seedlings and the standard recommendation for them is 16 hours on although 24 hours causes no harm. Again, all of this is discussed in great detail in the FAQs and many discussions over on the Growing from Seed forum here. Wheter you can harden them off or not I can't say. That is done outside, not inside so is a totally different discussion. But no, you cannot take them from growing indoors directly out into the direct sun. Dave

Cost effective mulch for tree seedlings in open land?

Not so good! It was TOO WET and apparently some animals killed some of the trees. Now it's TOO DRY as it hasn't rained very much since March or April. It went from swamp to desert in matter of months. Oh well. Last month, I was at the property to do some trimming and some are hanging on. It just needed a good soaking rain and it probably got two or 3 good ones since then hopefully. I will still plant more trees but not as many because I plan on putting up cage which obviously will cost more and more time consuming. Not sure what I'll plant this time though. I'm hoping to get some taxodium mucronatum (montezuma cypress -evergreen cousin of bald cypress) in one gallon size if that nursery still have them available. The hardest part is finding a big bag of synthetic fertilizer for the trees like 12 months osmocote locally. Organic fertilizer apparently attracted small animals so no more of that.

H2O2 has an extra O atom (compared to H2O) in an unstable arrangement. It's the extra atom that makes it useful in horticultural applications. Generally, we're not concerned with aerobic forms of bacteria normally occurring in container media or on roots. Since H2O2 is an unstable molecule, it breaks down easily. When it does, a single O- atom and a molecule of water is released. This O- atom is extremely reactive and will quickly attach itself to either another O- atom forming stable O2, or attack the nearest organic molecule. Many disease causing organisms and spores are killed by O, the free O H2O2 releases is extremely effective at this. H2O2 can help eliminate existing infections and help prevent future ones. The free O atom can destroy dead organic material (i.e, leaves roots) that are rotting and spreading diseases. Reduced O levels and high temperatures encourage both anaerobic bacteria and fungi. When plants growing in soil are treated with H2O2 it will break down and release O into the area around the roots. This helps stop the O from being depleted in the water filled air soil air spaces until air can get back into them. High O levels at the roots will encourage rapid healthy root growth and discourage unwanted bacteria/fungi. I know it comes in several different strengths. I'm thinking 3%, 5%, 8% and 35% solutions. Cheapest is 35% which you dilute (to 3%) by mixing 1:11 with water. Plastic or glass is best to store it in, & the container should be opaque to prevent light degradation. If three-liter pop bottles are available in your area they are ideal for mixing and storing H2O2. Once you have it mixed at 3% (or start with 3%) mix it at the rate of 1-1/2 tsp/gallon of water as a cutting dip & up to 2-1/2 tsp/gallon to water containers with on a regular basis. Start at the lower concentration and increase concentrations gradually over a few weeks. H2O2 in high concentration is a powerful oxidant & will bleach skin white & oxidize almost anything it contacts - quickly, so be careful with it if you use it. Long term effect of cold on tomato seedlings

I've have had good luck with lots of varieties from early girls and 4th of July, to big beef, brandywine, super steak. This year I'm also trying Belgium giant, Cherokee purple, black krim, bloody butcher, early pick, Indigo rose, and a couple of others. To get the large varieties to produce well, I've been starting them 7 or 8 weeks prior to planting in the ground. Many go in the ground from 1 gallon pots. The planting area is covered with black plastic 2 weeks ahead of planting to help with heating the soil. Holes are cut in the plastic for the tomatoes. The black plastic stays on all summer. I have had pretty good luck with getting large plants, lots of tomatoes, and some really big tomatoes. The tomatoes in this picture are in 5ft high cages. I'm 5'11".

I have been using regular shop lights (fluorescent)to start seedlings for some years with good success; I observe certin rules gleaned from the wisdom and experiences of contributors to this and other forums both formal and non tech.
1. Use a good potting soil
2. Apply heat to the bottom for germination
3. Maintain proper moisture.
4. Using ordinary fluorescent lights, I expose seedlings to 14 hrs/per day with lamps as close to plant tops as possible. I also build reflectors from cardboard and foil on all sides of the seedling set-up.
5. Transplant when you have two sets of leaves AND the plants look heaalthy I transplant to a three inch pot. Type of pot is up to you. Many have had success with different containes. At this point it doesn't matter much.I use Neptunes Harvest here.
6. An area of recent research to look at is the temperature which best enhances seedling growth, future fruit set, plant health etc. Commercial growers are looking carefully at this and we home gardeners might invest some Feb. down time googling some of the work done up until now. My unheated cellar is between 60-65 in April when I start my matos and other veggies and seems to be just right according to the very tentative studies done up until now. Would love to find out if anyone finds further inf0.

I use cool white lights for my seedlings.

A college professor of mine, Mira Zussman, once said that the best question you can ask is, "so what?" So, I'll ask it here. So what? What difference is a few days or hours going to make? I know for a fact that the delay is insignificant. My tomatoes just germinated this morning in...drum roll please...five and a half days! Honestly, the added warmth of the lights in the confined space I have them mounted more than offset any retardation of germination that may have occurred.

As far as the 16-hour photoperiod is concerned, I don't know enough to reject or accept the theory. But I'm not taking their word for it. I don't do 16-hour photoperiods simply because they're not required.

sconticut, the best book I have found for what you describe as the "Cold Treatment" for growing seedling plus photo light periods among other topics is explained in detail in the book "Greenhouse Tomatoes, Lettuce & Cucumbers" by S.H. Wittwer & S. Honma. Don't know if it is still in print. Hope this helps.

The "sow what" is that better cared for, less stressed plants ultimately do and yield better.

Much like a child getting a better start. It's not that they wont grow or not produce, it is just that they have a much better chance to do better.

Not sure if this changes anyones mind but I just germinated mine in complete darkness and had first germination after 2 1/2 days and virtually all after 4 1/2.
