What is this/these leaf problem ? thanks in advance

No rain lately, temps averaging 90. sandy soil, i water at base of plant,sprayed with Ortho Garden disease conrol after the leaves started turning yellow etc.. Finally got a little rain the other night after 2 weeks of nothing. Need to spray again correct? Sandy soil. How often should i water. I have oak leaf mulch mixed in with soil and oak leaves spread a couple of inches thick all over garden to control weeds.Hope the photo uploads.John

Continue spraying on a regular basis with the Ortho.

Looks like bacterial speck. Go to the Tomato Problem Solver thread (middle of this page) and you will find a wealth of info and picutres of your problem.

I think that is the same thread that Carolyn mentioned to check out, which I did but it seemed like it looked like alot of those photos. Mostly, like one's of the bacterial problems.That is why I took my own photo.OK,I will continue to spray.Just hope I can get it to stop spreading. Anything else I can do? and what could cause this? It looks like the same problem I have gotten the last 2 years but the other 2 years were rainy and hurricanes wiped out the gardens anyway.John

Hi Krolik, How's your plant doing? Here are a couple of thoughts. 1, Travel can be stressful for plants, they can pick up exposure to who knows what. 2, Bathroom humidity, It may not dry out enough, in there, to kill unwanted organisms, or let the plant cells move water. Consider moving the plant out of there for a few days, or a couple of weeks. Just give it a light morning spritz in it's new home. A flor. plant light -10$ and timer -8$ if the light needs adjusting+ a little, somewhere else. 3, Light anti-fungals/microbials, Neem oil from Logee's, that stuff is good! Meanwhile, have you tried watering with a little green tea, or black tea or coffee that's been thinned, or a spray of water and white vinegar, say from 1/10th to 1/3rd vinegar? And there's lysol spray, or other similar cheap substitute [saw that in gardenweb, just don't remember if it was on begonias]. My begonias perk up with the vinegar spray. One liked half cup of old coffee in its quart+ watering pot too. 4, Soil changes/repot.I had an ailing Sophie Cecile, one I had growing on from cuttings. I took a chance with it, because I didn't want to throw it out. I repotted it, down a little, because of fewer roots, with a little good soil from the yard. The soil had a little clay, a tiny bit of wood ash, some peaty compost, and maybe a little dog residue. They are supposed to like a little clay, and potash is good for fighting ills, and the texture was open from the plant material. It turns out that there's something in dung preferably cow, that helps fight off some virus or fungus or other. It was happy at the end of the summer,when it came out from under a shrub. I'm hoping that you can hold out till spring when you can set it in a protected spot.

Carolyn: I have sprayed with Kelp, but not for a while. It seemed that every time I sprayed with something, even Kelp, it burned the leaves. I try spraying only in the evenings so the hot sun does not burn the leaves. Last year, you diagnosed my tomato plants as having TSWD and I pulled them all and burned them (No tomatoes that year). But these plants don't look the same as those I had last year. These start at the bottom of the plant and are yellowing with purple veins. The ones last year, started at the top, and especially the newest foliage at the top was effected--and the leaves themselves last year, had a purple tint. I thought this might be a phosphate problem because I bought some bone meal and feed it to the plants having this problem and it did seem to help some. But I hesitate about using more because I don't want to over do it--I was afraid the Nitrogen in the Bone Meal might make the plant bushy and stop producing blooms and fruit. In order to prevent Thrips and Aphids this year, I have occasionally spayed with Pyola & Bulls-eye from Garden Alive. What do you think do you think about a deficiency? Thanks, Sheila

The first 2 photos look like heat blisters. Exactly how close is that light located to the plant leaves? The 3rd and 4th photo looks like a nitrogen deficiency (with the 4th one showing some burning/wilting on the tips). How often are you watering them? The rest of the leaf looks pretty lush, so I would think that it might be overwatering rather than underwatering. The last one looks like a manganese or potassium deficiency. However, I am just sticking with possible nutrient problems and not considering any possible diseases or infections which might be causing these symptoms. I have downloaded several web site pages with various photos of the different deficiencies. If you give me an e-mail address, I will send you .pdf's of them. I would suggest trying to back them a bit away from the light source to avoid overheating/blistering the plant and give a dose of plant food with decent nitrogen and potassium it in. If it is a nitrogen or potassium deficiency that's causing the yellow coloration, you should see some improvement with the color within a few days. You have to be patient though and not overdo it with the plant food since it does take some time to take effect on the plant.

Before I even read everything you wrote my first assumption was your mix. Sounds like you are using a very fine mix, at least what is bagged and what the nursery recommend and you are watering in sips...Did you do a repot since you potted them up two years ago? How big are the pots? Do you make sure your mix dries out before watering again? Do you know if the mix you use even needs watering in 48 hours? A regular timed watering system does not work for potted citrus especially unless you are using a fast drying draining mix.. You must address the mix first and your watering habits. You must use a porous one in order to use your timing watering system, or water by hand if using a bagged mix. That is the choice we make when growing citrus. They are VERY picky about their watering needs and soil mix requirements. Your issues are most likely stemming from the mix and the amount of moisture those roots are subjected to, along with a combination of dissolved salts killing the roots preventing nutrition uptake and attracting pest issues..Woo, that's a mouthful.) Can we all address the mix first? What can you do? Do you have access to perlite? Do you have access to bagged bark pieces? Can you take a picture of your trees and especially the soil they are in so we can see what it looks like? D Do you keep them outside all year long? How much sun? Unfortunately if it is bacterial in nature Ortho's Gardener's Disease Control would not work. One of things you can use on bacterial leaf spotting is copper.

Looks like alot of things to me. You need to see it close up to distinguish one thing from another. Even trained IPM scouts some times have a hard time telling certain diseases apart in the very early stages. For the commericial grower field test kits are available for some of the diseases.

I am replying to your post with one caveat: I am a first time gardener.

However, when I saw your photo, it looked exactly like my plants. I had taken some leaves off, viewed them with reading glass, i.d. book in hand. I think it is Early Blight.

What I have been doing: I remove the bad leaves, make sure the plants do not "bunch up" so that air can flow and spray with copper every 7 days. So far, the plants are hanging in there and producing fruit.

I also have been doing the aspiring mixture (mentioned on the forum here). Not sure which one is working best but both do seem to do the trick.

In addition to this, I foliar feed 1x per week and keep them watered well. Figured they do not need any more stress.

Ok.I went to wallyworld and they had LIQUID COPPER FUNGICIDE by Southern AG. Got home and it said to peel label open for directions. i peeled and there was nothing!!I googled it and found out there was also a NEUTRAL COPPER FUNGICIDE. Did I get the wrong one? Only directions they had were what I pasted below.Could not find any info about how soon I could pick veggies after using.I am guessing that this stuff is not too bad for us ;-(
Some of my plants looked like they were wilting at the top this afternoon. I will see how they look tomorrow and also follow julieann's advice and pick off all the bad leaves. I think a couple of these plants are gonna croak.I was thinking of spraying wih the ortho also tomorrow.

CONTAINS: 31.4% Copper Ammonium complex

IF , and that is a big if, the problem is bacterial that is one type of copper spray to use.

Unfortunately the disease looks quite advanced and no matter what you have it is much more difficult to control when it has spread so much.

But you can always prune off infected leaves and try the copper but follow the label exactly. You don't want to get too much on the soil.

Commercial grower do spray one week with one thing and something else the next week so you can alternate but I am not sure of the exact time schedule--maybe contact the manufacturor.

Farkee, what does it look like to you? A combo of things?
I mixed it 1 oz per gal in my ortho sprayer. I don't think my sprayer ever works well.But anyway, I soaked the plants :-(??
What happens if too much gets into the soil?
How soon can you pick fruit/veggie? It does not say.Is this stuff poison?
Next year i am spraying before I see a yellow leaf for sure.I get the feeling that there is something in my soil that is lying in wait for my tomatoes. I planted them at other end of garden last year but still had this problem.

I just can't tell with pictures. Spots converge and coalesce on so many disease (and deficiencies)--hard to tell what the early symptoms were. Here is a disease key--just click on everything and you begin to see what you need to know to diagnose something. (and this key doesn't even cover everything)

I also like the link below (scroll down)--check out bacterial speck/spot, septoria, early blight. Small spots to start with, maybe bacterial speck/spot. Do you see concentric circles sometimes seen in early blight lesion? One type of powdery mildew produces yellow patches without the powder then the leaves eventually brown and die.

If you started Ortho early (as you said) and sprayed regularly with no results could be bacterial as noted above.

Is there an extension near by that you can run a large sample by (not one leaf)?

Copper persists in the soil so you are not supposed to over apply it and too much can retard plant growth. Again just follow the label.

Good luck with your plants --hope you are still getting fruit despite the problems.
